M. K. Gabunia. Early Stages of the Palaeolithic in the Region of the South-Georgian Volcanic Highlands

This article presents a description of Acheulian materials from the South-Georgian Volcanic Upland. The discussion is focused on the early Palaeolithic site of Amiranis-gora. Judging by the palaeomagnetic evidence (the lower boundary of the Jaramillo episode) and faunal finds, the site is almost 1 million years old. The faunal assemblage includes both Mammuthus aff. trogontherii, Archidiscodon meridionalis, Equus hipparionoides. Equus sussenbomensis (76.5% of all the bones), Dicerorhinus etruscus. Hippopotamus georgicus, Homotherium sp. and other extinct animal species. The stone tools (cores, side-scrapers and flakes) were found in associations with the animalbones. They were made from lava rocks and are very primitive.

The other Acheulian assemblages and single artefacts mentioned in this paper are surface finds of the Upper-Acheulian appearance including some fairly expressive handaxes. The most noteworthy series of these handaxes have been collected at the sites of Chikiani (near Lake Paravani) and Persati (north-west of the city of Akhaltsikhe). The author comes to the conclusion that the paleoecological situation in the South-Georgian Volcanic Upland was very propitious for their occupation by ancient man at the earlier stages of his existence.

A.E. Matyukhin. Biryuchya Balka 2. Multilayered Palaeolithic Site on the Seversky Donets River

The Seversky Donets is one of the largest rivers in the south of the Russian Plain. Within its basin, Palaeolithic sites dated from pre-Moustier to the late phase of the Upper Palaeolithic are known. Only in the Biryuchya Balka (ravine) near the Khutor of Kremenskoy in the Konstantinovskiy Region of Rostov Oblast, eight multilayered Palaeolithic sites have been revealed and excavated (fig. 1). This paper deals with the most representative one - the site of Biryuchya Balka 2.

The thickness of the deposits at the site under consideration is up to 9 m (fig. 2). Among these, seven Mousterian horizons, five late Palaeolithic and one Neolithic have been revealed. The excavations were carried out in 1988-1992 and in 2000-2004 in three areas separated by some space from each other. Along with (he archaeological excavations, also studies of the site by methods of natural sciences were conducted in order to determine, in particular, its absolute dates, to reconstruct its environment and climate during its occupations by man.

Palaeomagnetic studies of the balka's alluvium (the lower Mousterian horizons) in the base of the section showed an indistinct manifestation of the excurse of Kurgapolovo with the chronological range within 44-42 millennia. For one of the upper Mousterian horizon, an AMS date of 40,750 ± 970 BP (Beta 183590) has been obtained on a bone. For the main late Palaeolithic horizon 3 containing triangular points, two AMS dates have been obtained on bones: 26,390 ±200 BP (Beta 177776) and 31,560 ± 1200 BP (Beta 183589). The second date seems to be more reliable. Finally, for horizon 3a covering directly horizon 3, an AMS bone date of 26,630 ± 230 BP (Beta 183588) is known. Bones have been found mostly in the lower Mousterian horizons. They belonged predominantly to bison, but also to deer, and possibly to horses and small antelopes.

In the lower Mousterian layers 6, 5v, 5b and 5 (in designations of some of the horizons the first letters of the Russian alphabet are added to the numerals, viz. a, 6, в, here transcribed as a, b, v), numerous flint artefacts, animal bones and spots of ashes have been uncovered. Among the finds from these horizons not only radial (fig. 5: 17) and parallel flat cores (fig. 4: 24; 5: 16; 6: 14) , but also volumetric ones (fig. 3: 1; 4: 20-21, 23) have been distinguished. The latter, furthermore, include a number of edge-faceted nuclei (fig. 4: 23). Characteristic arc small volumetric cores (fig. 5: 5). From a large quantity of coarse flakes, a few fairly expressive examples have been distinguished (fig. 4: 7). Especially noteworthy are blades and bladelets (fig. 3: 4; 4: 3, 11-19; 5: 1-3, 11). Generally, these differ from the typical blades of the late Palaeolithic period, having at the same time much in common with them. Among the tools, scrapers certainly prevail (fig. 3: 2; 4: 1, 6; 5: 4,

15) , whereas points (fig. 3: 3; 4: 8; 5: 9) are much less numerous. The end-scrapers (fig. 4: 2, 4, 6; 5: 8, 14) deserve a special attention. Tools with bifacial retouch are rare (fig. 5: 6). The characteristic techniques seem to have been thinning of the bodies of tools or flakes and partial retouch of their ventral surfaces (fig. 4: 1, 10; 5: 12). Of note are blade lets with retouch (fig. 5: 7).

Among the finds from the upper Mousterian horizons (4, 4' and 3v) also flat-parallel cores are prevailing (fig. 6: 4). At the same time, in horizon 4, volumetric cores are very expressive (fig. 6: 15-17). The blades and blade lets are equally indicative as in the underlying horizons (fig. 3: 10, 13, 14, 18, 19; 4: 11, 12; 6: 11, 13). Tools amount to about 1% of the total number of artefacts. The first place is held by side-scrapers (fig. 3: 17; 6: 2, 3, 9). Among the finds from horizon 4, also fairly variable end-scrapers are indicative (fig. 6: 7, 70, 18). A noteworthy feature of the artifacts from horizons 4 and 3v is the presence of tools with bifacial retouch (fig. 3: 6-9, 20; 6: 5. 6, 19). The latter have been uncovered mostly in fragmentary state. Some of the tools are completed. Bifacial points have not been found. The material from the lower horizons (5v. 5b and 5) suggests the existence here of transitory camps-workshops which probably were seasonable. The industries of horizons 4 and 3v seem to have been related with workshops where bifacial tools were manufactured.

The assemblage recovered from horizon 3b is evidently the earliest one at Biryuchya Balka 2. The tools include side-scrapers, end-scrapers (fig. 7: 6) and bifacial triangular points (fig. 7: 5). The richest in terms of the finds is horizon 3. In the three areas excavated, its industry is represented by more than 200 thousand flint artifacts. Flakes and debris certainly prevail. Among the cores, predominant are flat-parallel ones with negatives of the flakes (fig. 8: 10). Volumetric cores are as a rule not numerous (fig. 8: 8, 9). Nevertheless, their presence here is by no means fortuitous. Blades are fairly uncommon. Their morphology is about the same as that of the Mousterian blades. Tools compose less than 1% of the total number of artifacts. The first places are held by scrapers and various tools with bifacial retouch. The endscrapcrs are mostly made on flakes (fig. 7: 2-4, 6-8; 8: 6, 7, 9, 10, 14). Blade end-scrapers are rare (fig. 8: 2, 3). Of note are rounded end-scrapers (fig. 7: 4, 7; 8: 9, 14), oval (fig. 7: 8), and fan-shaped items (fig. 7: 2, 3; 8: 3, 6). Also noteworthy are end-scrapers with ventral retouch (fig. 7: 4, 7; 8: 6, 7). Side-scrapers are also numerous (fig. 8: 15). Burins, scaled pieces and borers are not presented any distinctively. Micro-tools are totally absent Points are found only occasionally (fig. 8: 4). Among the bifacially retouched tools, the bifaces proper (fig. 8: 1, 13). tools with partial bifacial retouch (fig. 8: 5) and triangular points (fig. 9) have been distinguished.

In horizon 3a. unlike horizon 3, animal bones and ashy spots have been found along with flint objects. Among the flint artifacts, products of primary flaking are notably predominant Fairly expressive are volumetric cores (fig. 7: 26, 32, 33), blades and bladelets (fig. 7: 12-19, 24, 25, 27-29, 31, 34). Prevailing among the tools are end-scrapers (fig. 7: 9, 10, 22, 23, 30). Burins (fig. 7: 21) and side-scrapers (fig. 7: 77) are rarely found. The evidence recovered allows us to suppose here a camping site of short use. And finally, horizon 2 contains only flint artifacts. These are presented mostly by debitage. Among the assemblage recovered from the southern area, triangular points have been distinguished (fig. 7: 1). The industry resembles that of horizon 3.

The industries of the lower Mousterian horizons have parallels among the Mousterian industries of such sites as Shlyakh in the Volga area, Belokuzminovka and Kurdyumovka in the Don basin and the Monasheskaya and Barakayevskaya caves in the northern Caucasus. The industries of the upper Mousterian horizons resemble those from the sites of Kalitvenka la in the Kamensky region of Rostov oblast and Antonovka 1 and 2 in the Don basin. The industries of the Upper Palaeolithic horizons 3b and 2 in terms of their artefacts are close to the site of Biryuchya Balka lv which is situated 1. 5 km from Biryuchya Balka 2. By the presence of triangular points in (heir industries these two sites are paralleled by a number of sites in the middle reaches of the Don River (Kostenki 1, 6, 11, 12: Garchi 1 west of the Urals and Sungir in Vladimir oblast). Nevertheless, there are no grounds to unite all these sites into a single, viz. Streletskaya culture. In fact, the sites enumerated may be associated with different cultures. It would be thus more correct to attribute them (including the site of Biryuchya Balka 2) to a group of industries with triangular points.

The presence of blades as well as end-scrapers among the finds from the Mousterian horizons at Biryuchya Balka 2 indicates the progressive character of these industries. We have therefore grounds to suppose that the late Palaeolithic industries with triangular points as well as the Late Palaeolithic in general arose in the south of the Russian Plain without any influences (including the Aurignacian one) from outside. Thus in the territory under consideration essential changes in the material culture and subsistence mode of the early local communities took place during the Mousterian and Late Palaeolithic periods.

Тем не менее, концентрации хрома устойчиво фиксируются в кремнях I, III, IV, VII групп, кобальт улавливается в кремнях I, IX, X групп, скандий - в I, II, VII, IX, X группах, бериллий – в V, VII, XI группах, свинец – только в одной пробе IX группы, галлий – во II группе.

G. V. Sinitsyna, V. G. Kolokol’tsev. Species of Raw Flint as Chronological Indications for the Stone Age Sites on the Valday Hills

Studies of the recent years have resulted in discovery of a number of long-lived sites within the area of the Valday Hills: Podol III/1, Podol III/2, Baranova Gora. Their artefacts allow us to trace the relations between techniques of chipping flint and the use of different raw materials in particular periods of the Stone Age. Examination of the material of finds has shown what raw flint resources were used traditionally at different historical stages.

The geological data on the outcrops of flint enable us to evaluate its volumes. In terms of tectonics the Valday region is the north-western edge of the Moscow syneclise. The information on the deposits of flint is a result of medium-scale geological surveys supplemented by field investigations of 2005.

The pre-Quaternary surface of the territory under consideration is composed of the Lower and Middle Carboniferous marine and coastal terrigenous deposits and limestones gradually dropping down eastwards and south-eastwards. The summary thickness of the carboniferous rocks amounts to 300 m. The remarkable peculiarity of the carboniferous limestones of the Moscow syneclise, particularly of its north-western wing, is the presence of fairly voluminous zones of flint inclusions. In most cases these zones are represented by chains of lenses and concretions oriented in layers and varying in their cross-section from 1 cm to 40-60 cm. The thickness of the flint-containing zones varies from a few decimetres up to 1, 0-1, 5 m or occasionally even more. For example, in the Tarusa horizon, 8-10 m thick, the proportion of the beds of dark-brown and almost black flint amounts up to 20-30 percent of the section.

The most voluminous accumulations of nodules, concretions and slabs of flint are found in the middle section of the Carboniferous system. Hie colour of the flint is variable: from light-grey to black, pink, red and brown, with every possible colour transitions. In the report on the geological surveys it is stressed that «dark-grey, almost black and brown flints» have paragenetic ties with the Tarusa horizon; in some cases deposits of «grey and brown» flints are noted in the Protva horizon.

The depth of the penetration of erosion suggests that the stock of raw flint available for use by ancient man within the limits of the Valday Heights may be estimated at millions tons. These calculations are an additional confirmation of the hypothesis of V. A. Galibin and V. I. Timofeev on the interregional scale of exports of flint from the Upper Volga to the flintless north-western zones.

The raw materials used by man at the boundary between the Pleistocene and Holocene differ visually from those used by the Mesolithic and Neolithic populations.

Artefacts found in stratigraphic conditions at long-lived sites allowed us to reveal the regularities of use of different raw materials in different periods of the Stone Age. In 2005, results of spectral analysis were obtained for groups of raw material distinguished visually.

The results of approximate quantitative determination of 45 elements by spectral analyses of 23 samples have shown a low concentration (below the sensibility threshold of the method) of 20 elements (potassium, strontium, hafnium, thallium, cerium, yttrium, uranium, thorium, lithium, tungsten, tin, tellurium, antimony, arsenic, thallium, germanium, indium, cadmium, bismuth, zinc). Close to the lower limits of sensitivity were the contents of chromium, cobalt, scandium, beryllium, lead, and gallium. Nevertheless, the concentrations of chromium were stably recorded in flints of groups I, III, IV and VII; cobalt was identifiable in flints of groups I, IX and X; scandium in groups I, II, VII, IX and X; beryllium in groups V. VII and XI; lead has been determined only in one probe from group IX, and gallium in group II.

A change of the orientation of a population to some other sources of raw materials is one of the primary indications of a cultural change. Analyses of the raw materials used can suggest what outcrops of flint were available to ancient man in a particular period.

Results of these studies have confirmed the hypothesis proposed earlier that populations of different cultures were oriented to differing sources of raw materials depending, possibly, on the availability of the latter at particular stages of die Stone Age.

Gorodilov A. Yu. Unpublished Burials of the Cemetery of Oleneostrovsky on Lake Onega (after M. B. Emler’s Reconnaissance Expedition of 1936)

In 1936 M. B. Emler conducted the excavations of the burial ground on the southern Olenij island of lake Onega. Two trough-shaped pits were discovered by a reconnoitring trench that were analogous by their length, width, depth, form, orientation and quantity of ochre in the filling to those actually containing human remains. Almost 70 years have passed, but they still remain undivulged.

The purpose of this article is to publish these materials, to determine the exact position of these pits and to consider the nature of the concerned objects

and their place in the culture of the Oleneostrovski burial.

It is possible to make the following conclusions:

1. These are the ritual objects that functioned as a part of an indivisible ceremonial space of the Oleneostrovski burial. This shows that its the area was wider than deemed before.

2. These constructions are most likely to be cenotaphs. It is possible to draw an analogy to such constructions in the Scateholm II graveyard in Southern Sweden.

P. M. Leus. Stone Stelae from Hakkari (Turkey) and Their Parallels

In the Summer of 1998, thirteen stelae with human half-figures were found by chance in the Turkish city of Hakkari. All of the stelae were standing in situ close to each other at the foot of a rock. There was a fortress of the Ottoman period on the top of that rock.

The stelae were stone slabs from 0.70 up to 3.10 m high and 15—20 cm thick. Only the 'face' side of the slabs was worked. On eleven of the stelae, the human figures were rendered in the relief while on the other two, including the tallest one, they were cut deeply into.

Each stela represents a human half-figure, the legs having been shown in none of the images. The faces are mostly rounded but occasionally they are elongated and narrow. The nose and eyebrows are characteristically expressed as a single relief. Stone inserts are preserved in the eye-sockets on some of the relief stelae.

In the right hand at the level of the breast the figures hold a small vessel represented in some cases very schematically as a small hole between the thumb and the forefinger. Stone anthropomorphic sculptures with a vessel in one or both hands are found until the Middle Ages in many nomadic cultures of Eurasian steppes.

Near the left hand or on the shoulder of the figures there is some object with a rounded top and enlarged base. In the middle it is slightly narrowed. This object is believed to be a tent resembling jurts of Central-Asian nomads. In my opinion, however, it is more justifiable to interpret it as a shield. Similar shields are represented on a bronze-plated belt dated to the early 1st millennium ВС from Stepanovan in Armenia. The girdles of the figures from Hakkari are designed with lines, triangles and zigzags. Below the girdle, a waistcloth is shown which in some cases also is ornamented. On the right, a dagger is hanging at the bell. On some of the figures the dagger is suspended parallel to the waist like on certain sculptures of the Scythian period. The animals represented on the stelae have parallels among rock carvings in Azerbaijan.

A small deer figure on one of the stelae is in general close stylistically to some engraved representations on bronze-plated belts from the Transcaucasia.

The publishers of the finds supposed that these stelae were related with the independent state of Hubushkia which, as attested by Assyrian sources, was once situated in this region. Therefore the stelae from Hakkari were dated tentatively to the period between the late 2nd and early 1st millennium ВС.

The semantics of the images is not quite certain. They are believed to be connected with the cult of dead or to be manifestations of a deity. It was supposed also that the stelae may have represented the rulers of the state of Hubushkia. This hypothesis is possibly corroborated by the symbols of royalty - staffs shown under the right hand of many of the figures.

Certain analogies to the stelae from Hakkari can be observed on stelae from Arjaq Qal'eh in the plain of Meshkin Shahr in north-western Iran and on some from Azerbaijan and Armenia. Similar iconographic features are shown by stelae of the Bronze Age from the regions of the Mediterranean and Black Sea which are undoubtedly older than those from Hakkari. Possibly we are dealing here with one of the potential evolutionary lines or genetic ties of anthropomorphic stelae from the region of the Mediterranean and Asia Minor.

Summing up the above we may state preliminarily that although the finds from Harakkari certainly belong to the circle of anNear the left hand or on the shoulder of the figures there is some object with a rounded top and enlarged base. On the right, a dagger is hanging at the bell. On some of the figures the dagger is suspended parallel to the waist like on certain sculptures of the Scythian period. The animals represented on the stelae have parallels among rock carvings in Azerbaijan.thropomorphic sculptures and stelae of the given region, they have nevertheless some peculiarities segregating them into a special group. The iconography of the representations is probably tied with traditions of the cultures of Eurasian nomads whereas the technique of their manufacture was influenced by the Western Asian monumental art. Clarification of the cultural belonging and dates of the stelae needs further studies.

Г., А. В. Могильник Арбан I

D.G. Savinov, A.V. Polyakov. The Burial Ground of Arban I

This article is basically a publication and a primary interpretation of the finds from the Karasuk cemetery of Arban I situated in the Askiz region of the Republic of Khakassia. The complex under consideration was excavated in 1987-88 by the First Detachment of the Middle-Yenisey Expedition headed by D. G. Savinov. Some of the materials obtained have already been published, but a complete report on all of the burials is first presented here.

The burial ground containing a total of 72 burials and four ritual deposits is interesting mostly by the fact that it consists of two groups of graves. The first group (54 burials) represents the 'classic' stage of the Karasuk culture, while the second one (18 burials) belongs to the Kamennolozhsky stage. These groups demonstrate marked differences both in their construction and in the funerary offerings. This cemetery therefore provides us with an example to discuss the problem of the interrelation between the two stages of the Karasuk culture. Here a brief review of opinions suggested on these problems is presented and the views of the present authors are then proposed on the basis of the aggregate of the objective evidence (including the plan of the cemetery of Arban I).

The finds from the 'classical' section of the cemetery considered together with other sites lying nearby give us grounds to distinguish still another local 'Arban' group of burials. Practically all cemeteries of the 'classic' stage of the Karasuk culture situated in the south-western part of its area (Khara-Khaya. Tert-Aba, Yesinskaya MTS. Bel'tyry. Torgazhak) demonstrate similar features differing markedly from the type sites of the same period. The factors unifying the former sites are the pottery decorated with toothed stamps, the presence of certain traits peculiar rather to the Kamennolozhsky stage of the culture, the general 'poorness' of the graves and instability of die burial rite. The features mentioned above resulted probably of the marginal location of the group and, perhaps, its partial isolation from the major centres.

The cemetery of Arban I, due to its marginal position and a number of its specific features cannot be considered as a type site of the Karasuk culture. Nevertheless, the presented here evidence related with a turning-point in die history of the Karasuk tribes, reflects on the whole fairly exactly the major trends in the cultural genesis of the Late Bronze Age in the south of the Minusinsk Basin.

I. P. Lazaretov. Sites of the Bainov Type and the Tagar Culture

This paper deals with archaeological complexes dated from the transition between the late Bronze Age and (he Scythian period in southern Siberia. This group of sites was distinguished by S. A. Teploukhov as intermediate between the Karasuk and Tagar cultures. Later, MP. Gryaznov untied the latter two into the early stage of the Tagar culture and gave it the name after the cemetery of Bainov Ulus. He pointed out to the undoubted relation of the Bainov complexes with Bronze Age sites and at the same time noted that they contain early variants of weapons, tools and ware of the Scythian period. Gryaznov's periodical scheme is accepted and employed by most of the archaeologists. The autochthonous origins of Scythian sites in the Minusinsk Basin are considered as a an established fact needing no additional argumentation.

The chronological position of the Bainov type sites really is correct, but their ethnocultural attribution is arguable. In all of the publications, the burial grounds are enumerated and archaeological complexes summarily described without any substantiation of their cultural belonging.

A detailed examination of the sites of the Bainov type shows that they are subdivided into two distinctly independent groups. One is similar to the type burial ground of Bainov Ulus. The funerary rites, major types of wares

and tools of the first group originate in the complexes of the late Bronze Age. They are devoid completely of elements of the 'Scythian triad1. Only these complexes should be called the Bainov ones. Probably we may consider them as the later phase of the Bronze Age Lugavskaya culture.

The second group of burials contains weapons, objects of the “animal style”, ornaments and wares characteristic of the early Scythian period. These assemblages have nothing to do with the cemetery of Bainov Ulus and belong to the beginning of the Podgomovo stage of the Tagar culture.

In spite of the popular opinion, there are no signs of continuity between the two groups. Their uniting into a single stage is erroneous. The articles in the Scythian “animal style” characteristic of the Tagar culture, assemblages of ornaments and the pottery with cylindrical ridges have no origins in the local cultures of the Bronze Age. These features were brought to the Minusinsk Basin by a new population in the completely established form. The probable departure region of the migration seems to have been the territories of Kazakhstan or Mongolia. There, among the post-Andronovo tribes, there must have been all the necessary prerequisites for the formation of a Scythian type culture.

I.Yu. Shaub. Semantics of Grave Goods from the Olbian Necropolis of the 6th-4th Century BC

The most noteworthy of funerary offerings from the Olbian necropolis of the 6th-4th century ВС is pottery with Attic imports predominating in it. The overwhelming majority of the motifs of painting on the latter belong to the Dionysian circle. Associated with the Dionysian ideas about death (as residence in the Dionysian paradise) probably were also numerous ivy designs and palmettes on Attic vases as well as representations of lotus and ivy and those of ivy on Ionian vases.

The next in terms of the frequency of its occurrence on the vases is a water-fowl motif. These representations are an additional evidence that religious concepts connecting these birds with the other world were widely distributed in the northern Black Sea area.

Tied with ideas about the other world are undoubtedly also the fairly numerous representations of sphinxes.

Furthermore, vessels with representations of a struggle between Heracles and a lion, a centaur, a bull or Antaeus are in no way accidental in the graves.

Bronze dolphin-shaped coins (as well as representations of dolphins on pottery) from Olbian graves may be considered as a symbol of revival rather than as "obols of Charon".

Lion and ram were considered both by the Greeks and the Scythians as sacred animals of ambivalent nature: they were connected alike with the sun and the chthonic world. Therefore the abundance of their representations on various objects found in Olbian graves is not surprising.

Lunate pendants are possibly reflections of the cult of the Moon as suggested by their analogies with similar female ornaments in heathen Rus.

Mirrors were peculiar to late Archaic rich female burials. The fact that these objects are commonly accompanied by stone slabs of ritual purpose indicate their religious meaning. The combination of the two

objects (along with some other) is an expressive evidence of the barbarian belonging of the interred women - priestesses whom these objects were accompanying. The barbarian provenance is suggested also by a bronze model of a Scythian bow from a child's grave of the 5th century ВС.

Thus all of the finds from the necropolis of Olbia of the 6th-4th centuries ВС give us grounds to suppose that they had a semantic significance.

A. M. Novichikhin. Bronze Cauldron from the Neighbourhood of the Stanitsa of Gostagayevskaya

A bronze forged cauldron 29 cm high and 44 cm in diameter (fig. 1) was found by chance near the stanitsa (Cossack village) of Gostagayevskaya, not far from the settlement-site of Gostagayevskoye. The find is housed now in the Anapa Archaeological Museum.

This is the third object of the same shape from the region of the city of Anapa (the territory of ancient Sindike): two similar vessels were uncovered in barrows of the Semibratniye or Seven Brothers group. Another find comes from the Kuban River—from a burial in the Kurdzhip kurgan. From outside the limits of the Kuban area, finds of similar vessels also are reported. Two cauldrons were found on the Balkans: in the Kukova Grave, Bulgaria (ancient Thrace), and in the famous 2nd Vergina Tomb, northern Greece (ancient Macedony). Two other were found in the disturbed Averinsky kurgan on the middle Don River. In each case, the cauldrons were uncovered in graves of the elite.

The assemblages containing the cauldrons are dated to the first half of die 5th century ВС (the Semibratniye

kurgans and Kukova Grave) or to the second half of the 4 th century ВС (Kurdzhips and Vergina). In the last case, the cauldron manufactured in c. 460 ВС was used for a long time.

The object from Gostagayevskaya has supplemented the number of Hie Kuban finds and confirmed L. K. Galanina's supposition that forged cauldrons of this shape were manufactured on the Kuban River. It is probable that Sindike was the center of their production in the 5 th century ВС.

The wide geographical distribution of these finds suggests that there were contacts of some type between the Kuban area and the Balkans enabling the forged cauldrons to come into hands of members of the Thracian and Macedonian elite. The existence of such contacts in about the middle of the 5th century ВС is quite probable.

The use and, possibly, manufacture of similar vessels continued until the end of the 4th century ВС when, as suggested by the Kurdzhips find, they were current among the Maeotian and Maeoto-Sirakian nobility.

(c. 4 AD).

R. V. Stoyanov. Chronology of the Area of the Hellenistic Necropolis near the Ceramic Workshops in the Tauric Chersonesos

This paper discusses chronological problems of an area of the necropolis of the Tauric Chersonesos. The area under consideration is situated near Curtain 19 of the south-eastern line of the city's defensive wall. During archaeological investigations conducted here in 1900, 1956 and 1958, thirty seven graves of the Hellenistic period were excavated. A wide range of grave goods found in the burials suggests that buried here were citizens of fairly varied ante-mortem welfare and social status. Finds from the funerary assemblages give us grounds to suppose that interments had begun within this territory not later than the early 2nd century ВС A time span of more than fifty years divided the cease of functioning of potters' workshops which had been here before and the appearance of the necropolis. The use of this area of the necropolis ceased probably due to construction of the proteichisma or front defensive wall in the 4th¢ury AD.

S.S. Minyaev, L.M. Sakharovskaya. A Han Chariot from the Cemetery of Tsaram

Since 1997, the Trans-Baikal Expedition of IIMK RAS has been excavating systematically a Hsiung-nu burial ground in the Pad (i. e. a gully or a brook ravine) of Tsaram (Kiakhta Region of die Republic of Buryatia, 1.5 km south of the settlement of Naushki. It is here that the largest of Hsiung-nu burial structures so far known in Russia and ones of the largest in the world are concentrated (for a detailed description of the site see: Миняев, Сахаровская 2000).

The main object of our studies was Kurgan 7 which is the largest barrow at the cemetery and one of the largest Hsiung-nu barrows known at present During the preceding field seasons excavated were an above-grave structure and a sophisticated structure inside the tomb consisting of a wooden cage in the upper part of the grave pit and four ceilings or coverings. The upper ceiling was composed of large adjoining stone slabs bud onto pinewood logs which covered all of the grave pit over from north to south. Under the logs a covering layer of reed was distinguishable. The second ceiling, located 120-150 cm below the first, consisted of stone slabs adjoining each other. Beneath the latter, a layer of reed also has been uncovered. The third ceiling was multi-layered: large stone slabs measuring on average 100 x 70 cm, a layer of charcoal and river pebbles, a layer of compacted birch bark, twigs and pine cones, and a layer of coarse gravel. The structure of the fourth ceiling also was multi-layered: a layer of large river pebbles, a layer of coarse gravel, and a layer of fine charcoal. During clearing of the third and fourth coverings, certain differences between their western and eastern sections have been noted. These distinctions were expressed in the colour and structure of the stone slabs: the western parts of these ceilings were composed of slabs of light-grey sandstone whereas the eastern sections were constructed of light-pink boulders. In the central part of the grave flit, two robber passages were detected. These had partly disturbed the central cage and all of the ceilings.

In the course of the excavation of the third and clearing of the fourth ceiling in the centre of the barrow at a depth of 10.5—11 m, different parts of a chariot were recovered. The arrangement of these parts suggests that the body of the chariot had been located beneath the third ceiling in the filling of the pit, while the tent and wheels were found above the stones of the third ceiling in the centre of the kurgan and thus must have been located above the level of that covering. Probably the chariot was set onto die stones of the fourth covering and later was covered by the filling of the pit as well as by gravel, pebbles, charcoal and slabs of die third ceiling (the tent and the wheels of the chariot having remained above the latter). When the fills of the pit sank, the parts of the chariot were displaced: they fell down damaged considerably as if by millstones by the movement of stone slabs, gravel and pebbles. Some time later, the chariot was additionally disturbed by robber passages: the northern passage damaged part of the harness and frame while the southern one crossed the presumable location of the scat having demolished a considerable part of the tent. Altogether, the details of the chariot were very poorly preserved: the wooden parts and organic material of the tent had decayed almost completely, the bronze and iron items of the harness had been severely oxidized and lost their original structure. Near the north-cm wall of the grave pit, a skull, two cervical vertebra and metapodials of a horse were found 1 m from the slope of the fifth step. Below, a description of the preserved parts of the chariot is presented.

The tent of the chariot. The remains of the tent were found in die centre of the pit, 4 m from its northern edge, above the stones of the third ceiling. The tent consisted of a wooden frame which once was covered by some organic material. The base of the frame was composed of thin wooden plates about 4 cm wide which were set crosswise. To these a number of thick arched twigs were fixed. Additionally this base was supplemented with thinner twigs 1-1.5 cm in diameter, deflected radially from the centre of the frame. The organic cover of die frame was two-layered: the upper layer consisted of a dark material (leather or felt) below which a thin layer of cloth has been recognized. This tent covering was fixed to the plates and twigs of the frame with thin iron Г-shaped nails. From inside the tent was coated with red lacquer which preserved traces of a geometrical pattern rendered in white, brown and dark-red paints. The southern part of the tent was destroyed by the southern robber trench.

The front yoke-pole of the chariot was found on the layer of pebbles and charcoal under the stones of the mini ceiling, 2.5 m north of the tent. The diameter of the pole was 18-20 cm. Its western edge was completely destroyed during the collapse of the third ceiling. The preserved length of the pole was 2.5 m. A bronze ferrule 10 cm long and 7 cm in diameter was fixed onto the eastern tip of the pole. The ferrule was completely oxidized and crushed by the pressure of the fills. Probably, a similar ferrule had been fixed onto die western destroyed end of the pole. Five pairs of square mortises measuring 3 x 1.5 cm for fixation of parts of the harness were discernible. They began 12 cm from the eastern tip of the yoke-pole and ran further to its entire length at intervals of 40-45 cm (the mortises in each pair were spaced 4 cm apart). Near the mortises, fragments of bronze were detectable - probably traces of bronze arches which had been set into the mortises).

At the western and eastern sides of the yoke-pole, as well as in its centre, remains of yoke-heads were uncovered. These were presented by boards 4 cm thick, 8 cm wide and with the preserved length of 25—30 cm. The position of the western yoke-head found in situ suggests that the heads were attached to the yoke-pole by means of special incuts; the lower parts of the yoke-heads were not preserved. In the upper part of the western and central yoke-heads there was a cylindrical projection onto which a bronze ferrule was put. On the eastern head this projection was broken off in antiquity but its traces were discernible in the upper part of trie head. The entire surface of the yoke-pole and yoke-heads was coated with black lacquer over which a geometrical pattern was drawn in white and red paint Stylistically, fragments of this pattern are similar to that on the inside of the tent of the chariot.

Wooden shafts. The two shafts of the chariot were beneath the front yoke-pole lying parallel to each other in the N-S direction 60 cm apart of each other. They

were very poorly preserved their southern parts cut off by the robber trench; the preserved length was 95-100 cm. On the surface of die shafts, traces of lacquer and pattern rendered in red and white paints were preserved. Near the eastern shaft at a distance of 10 cm from it, iron oval plates with holes on the shorter side were traced lying in line. Probably these were once sewn onto the leather belts of the harness or the reins. Below this line of plates, 30 cm to the east, an iron ring 6. 5 cm in diameter was found.

Wooden wheels. The remains of the wheels were located 1 m south of the shafts, on the stones of the third ceiling, die lower part of the western wheel found in die layer of pebbles and gravel underlying that ceiling. The wheels were spaced 2 m from each other and consisted of a felloe, spokes and, possibly, a central disc into which the ends of the spokes were inserted and in the centre of which the iron hub of the axle was placed. The wheels were considerably damaged by the pressure of the filling of the pit and ceilings. The diameter of the wheels was 120 cm; the number of the spokes amounted to 22, their thickness was 3-4 cm. Round the felloe of the western wheel, remains of a number of iron shackles were traceable. On the felloe and spokes, tiny fragments of red and white paint were preserved, the felloe and the adjoining parts of the spokes were painted in red to the length of 10-12 cm whereas the rest of the spokes was painted in white. The central parts of the wheels practically do not survive, nevertheless traces of red paint detected in the central parts suggest that the central disc of the wheel into which the spokes were inserted was painted in red.

In the pebble layer which underlay the third ceiling, small iron hubs with two projections have been uncovered directly outside of the wheels. On the outer side of the hubs, traces of wood were detectable. Under the wheels, also in the pebble layer of the third covering, large iron hubs with three projections on the outside each were found. These also bore traces of wood on the outer side (while in the centre of the large and small hubs no traces of wood have been detected). Preserved on the outer side of the larger hubs were the iron nails with which the hubs were fixed to the wooden cores of the wheels.

The rear yoke-pole. The appellation of this part of the chariot is arbitrary since its real purpose still is not clear. A number of facts do not allow us to interpret it as the axle of the chariot, in particular;

- the difference between the diameter of the pole and the inner diameter of the large iron hubs into which the axle must have been inserted;

- a separate position of the bronze axle-terminals (as described below) usually put onto the ends of the axle and differing in the diameter of the hub from the diameter of the rear pole (which furthermore had its own bronze terminals).

In its shape and dimensions the ‘rear yoke-pole’ resembled the front pole. Its base was a round pole 7 cm in diameter and about 3 m long. The major part of the pole had been cut off by the northern robber trench, only its eastern and western ends being preserved. On the tips of the pole bronze terminals 5. 5 cm in diameter and 7 cm long were put on. On the surface of the terminals a small cylindrical ledge was relieved (fig. 2: 10). From the inside of the terminals, 3-4 cm apart from the them, two iron arches were driven into the yoke-pole. Through these arches possibly some elements of the harness (belts or ropes) once passed. On the surface of the rear yoke-pole remains of lacquer and a pattern rendered in white paint were discernible.

Wooden elbow-rests of the seal. After the wheels had been cleared, directly below them were found remains of some pine wood blocks which possibly were once the elbow-rests of the seat. These consisted of boards 3—4 cm thick, decayed and compressed by the powerful pressure of the filling of the pit. The elbow-rests presumably were measuring 25 x 50 cm. Their surface was lacquered with a painted geometrical design traceable above.

The body of the chariot. After the wheels had been cleared and removed, in the space between the wheels and the remains of the chariot shafts were found and cleared remains of a trellised frame of the chariot and bronze axle-terminals. The remains of the frame consisted of several wooden planks which built-up the trellised part of the body. I-4n their crossings the planks were fixed together with iron nails. The thickness of the planks was 2-3 cm. The northern and southern parts of the trellised frame of the chariot, as well as, perhaps, the entire seat, were destroyed by the robber passages. North of the trellised frame, under its wooden planks were found two bronze axle-terminals in the form of circular discs with cylindrical ledges. The axle-terminals were 10 cm long and 12 cm in diameter in their base and 5 cm in diameter on the top. In the lower part of the terminals there were rectangular holes measuring 3 x 1. 5 cm for insertion of the pins. In their upper part they had Г-shaped projections probably to fix the belts of die harness.

The iron pins were found lying between the axle-terminals (fig. 3: 26). These consisted of iron plates 10 cm long of rectangular section with a ring-shaped terminal.

The absence of the wheel axle and the unusual position of the pair of axle-terminals (beneath the trellised body) suggest that the chariot was put into the tomb in a disassembled and possibly incomplete state. It is also noteworthy that the presence of three yoke-heads implies the use of three horses in the team. However, as mentioned above, only the skull, two cervical vertebra and metapodials only of a single horse have been uncovered. This horse was evidently laid into the tomb according to the principle «a part instead of the whole».

The construction of the chariot under consideration and its decorations have very close parallels among chariots of the Chinese Han period. The most comprehensive so far studies of these chariots carried out recently have enabled to distinguish a number of variants of their construction including those very similar to the chariot from Tsar-am. The Tsar am chariot like the Han examples has a tent consisting of a wooden framework covered by some organic material, four wooden posts supporting the tent, a trellised scat and wooden 'elbow-rests'. The body of the chariot and the painting of the wheels are remarkably closely paralleled by a recently restored chariot from the burial of the famous Han general Huoqiibing who fought against Hsiung-nu (Imperial China 2000). Judging by the number of yoke-heads, the Tsar am chariot was originally intended for a team of three horses that explains the use of two yoke shafts instead of a single central shaft (the use of which implies an even number of horses in the team) more typical of Han chariots.

Written sources often attest that among the gifts offered by the Han court to the fust-rank Hsiung-nu nobility there were inter alia chariots. Thus in 51 ВС shanyu Huhanye received along with other grants a «chariot with a seat» (Таскин 1973: 35). Thereafter, as mentioned in «Hanshu», not once the shanyu was given presents «like for the first time» (Таскин 1973: 36, 37, 51). During the epoch of Wang Mang (9—24 AD), who intended to divide Hsiung-nu into separate nomadic bands and to set his own chief at the head of each, one of the Hsiung-nu deserters, the right liyu-wang Xian was bestowed the title of Xiao-shanyu and given among other presents a "chariot with a seat and a chariot with a drum» (Таскин 1973: 57). In 50 AD the shanyu of the southern Hsiung-nu, Bi (grandson of Huhanye ruling under the same name as his grandfather) was granted «a carriage with a seat and an umbrella of feathers and a team of four richly harnessed horses » (Таскин 1973: 72). In 143 AD the southern shanyu Hulanzhuo in the throne hall of the imperial palace was granted along with other gifts «a chariot with the black top harnessed to a team of four horses, a chariot with a drum, a chariot with a scat»; the shanyu's wives were granted «two carriages decorated with gold and brocade and draught horses» (Таскин 1973: 94).

It is thus quite probable that the chariot found in Tsaram was also a gift from the Han court to one of the representatives of the Hsiung-nu elite. However, judging by the evidence from the «Hanshu» another event was also possible. In Wang Mang's epoch, son of the mentioned above Xiao-shanyu - Deng who was then at the imperial court in the quality of a hostage, was put to death in revenge of his father having deserted back to the northern Hsiung-nu and his brother's frequent raids to the borderlands. On the demand of Hsiung-nu the corpses of Deng and some other noblemen executed together with him were returned to their homeland for burial. For the transportation of the bodies they were «laid Into chariots» (Таскин 1973: 62). We may not rule out that later these chariots were buried in the tombs together with other funerary offerings.

It should be emphasized that in any case the records of chariots either as gifts or in connection with funerary ceremonies concern only the first-rank Hsiung-nu nobility, i. e. shanyus. their wives or sons. This fact is a further confirmation of the probability that Kurgan no. 7 in Tsaram is a burial of a representative of the Hsiung-nu elite, possibly a. shanyu.

Chkhaidze V.N. Hermonassa – Tomi – Tamatarcha: a Town of the Late Classical and Early Medieval Period in Bosporus

The period subsequent to the Hunnish invasion of the 370s is characterized by fading out of the Greek and Roman culture and a general crisis of the falling apart Bosporan state which became a province of minor importance in the Byzantine empire. The city of Hermonassa, situated aside of the major routes, had evaded the lot of the other Bosporan towns, the Huns having probably not even entered it. The subsequent fate of the city is known only from archaeological evidence. The latter suggests that not only the city's occupation had been continuing until at least the second quarter of the 6th century but even its life had suffered no considerable changes.

At die townsite, layers dated from the late 4th century AD until 570-580s have been revealed. The assemblage of artifacts is characterized by red-glazed pottery of the third quarter of the 4th-6th century and ceramic containers of the third quarter of the 6th century – the 570-580s. Of the individual finds noteworthy are two marble column capitals of the 5th century and a fragment of a relief of the 5th-6th centuries suggesting the existence of a Christian temple in the city.

The populations of Bosporan cities of the period under consideration were polyethnical, the Greek evidently remaining the official language of the Bosporus. Hermonassa probably retained its ancient name.

It is of importance, that the excavated layers of Hermonassa show an interruption between the 570-580s and the beginning of the 7th century indicating the events of 576 AD connected with the Turkic raid to the Bosporus and Crimea. The main centres of the Bosporus had not restored any more after the Turkic devastation. Hermonassa was perhaps one of those centres since we know almost nothing about the fate of the city in the end of the 6th - first half of the 7th century. Evidently, the occupation of the site ceased at that time.

However, from the 7th century, when the steppe Ciscaucasia including the region of the lower Kuban River became part of the political system of the Khazar Khaganate. the city received the new Turkic name of Tumen-Tarkhan. In the provinces, the previous

Byzantine administration may have been preserved since here originally the system of condominium had possibly existed. It is from Tumen-Tarkhan that the subsequent name of the city was derived, viz. Tamatarcha known from Byzantine sources and retained until the end of the 10th century.

In the opinion of a number of scholars, it is exactly this settlement that is mentio/ined under the name of Tom i in the tale of 704/705 about the escape of Justinian II from Phanagoria.

The 7th century is characterized by the emergence of new building traditions (opus spicatum) unknown before at the site. A new layout of the living blocks was formed. Assemblages of artifacts dated to the end of the 7th — beginning of the 8th century appear in the city. By the mid-8th century the entire complex of pottery had changed and the Azov variant of the Saltovo-Mayatskaya culture had emerged and begun its active development That culture had continued its domination until the 13th century.

G. G. Korol', L. V. Kon'kova. Imports from Southern Siberia in Eastern Europe and Problems of Ethno-Cultural and Regional Interactions in the 10th–13th Centuries

By the 10th— 13th centuries in Eastern Europe, certain traditions of manufacturing composite belt decorations (girdle and rider harness sets) were established. They were fairly inhomogeneous reflecting influences of various kinds (Scandinavian, Hungarian, late Khazarian, Byzantic, post-Sasanian and Islamic, as well as common-Turkic and nomadic in general). Studies aimed at detailed investigation of different levels of cultural interactions (exchange of information: handicrafts and technologies, import and export of goods) allow us to outline the perspectives of future ethnocultural reconstructions.

In Ancient Rus and among the nomads of the south-Russian steppes, objects made of bronze prevailed, although silver and iron items were also in use. In Volga Bulgaria, a centre where girdle and harness fittings were manufactured, along with non-ferrous metals also iron came to be widely used from the second half of the 11th and 12th century. At present, the base of archaeological evidence available and the increased number of publications allow us to trace the provenience and dissemination of some finds. The comparative analysis is based on complex approaches with the evaluation of both the morphology of artefacts and their manufacturing technology

and the system of ornamentation. These studies include examination of materials yielded by excavations and chance finds from southern Siberia and Central Asia.

The composite metal belt fittings found in Eastern Europe include single objects, which have no parallels here. A comparison of the shapes of these objects, the technology of their manufacture and peculiarities of their decorations with some Eurasian artefacts of the late 1st and early 2nd millennium AD showed that the objects under consideration were imported from the area of southern Siberia. There, a cire perdue technology of thin-walled casting prevailed during that period as well as openwork casting at the peak of that technology. The articles were decorated with peculiar relief designs, predominantly with floral filling. It is exactly these peculiarities that are characteristic of the abovementioned single finds from Eastern Europe.

In the beginning of the 1900s in Donskaya Province near the Azov Sea, during railway construction, a collection of objects was found which included a group of six bronze items: a belt tip, mounts of various forms and a clasp (fig. 1; State Historical Museum, Moscow, no. 54746/inventory 980). These items are paralleled by or even absolutely identical to some decorations of girdle and harness sets from southern Siberia. Their dates are the second half of the 10th - first half of the 11th century. Another example of belt ornaments of the south Siberian appearance is a silver open-work mount from Ukraine which has a close parallel from piedmonts of the Altai mountains (fig. 2).

It is difficult to identify the ways by which these objects penetrated Eastern Europe. From the middle of the 11th century, the Kyrgyz Kaganate was established in southern Siberia. For almost a century it exerted its influence on vast territories of Central Asia and seized control of short-haul and long-haul trade routes. One of the latter led from southern and western Siberia to Eastern Europe. Possibly, the finds under consideration are an additional confirmation of the effectiveness of that route. Also the opinion has been proposed that single south Siberian objects may have come to Europe with nomads at a time.

It is noteworthy that features of the ancient Russian Druzhinnaya or 'Retinue' culture included a combination of objects of various provenances, which were part of the outfit set of a mounted warrior. Some of belt mounts may have been used as decorative pendants in necklaces, as is attested, for instance, by two cast silver mounts with a slit which served as pendants in the necklace found in one of the Gnezdovo kurgans (fig. 3: I, 2). These, in our opinion, also belong to the circle of belt decorations widespread in southern Siberia, although differing from them in terms of their material and technological features. Possibly, the Gnezdovo mounts were made in one of the East European manufacturing centres after some ‘eastern’ original. We know 28 mounts from southern Siberia (fig. 3: 3-5), including a few found in Central Asia (fig. 3: 6-8), which are of identical shape and similarly decorated but larger than the ones from Gnezdovo.

For 14 items of the known 66 with various types of ornamental pattern, the composition of metal has been analyzed. The samples included those decorated by the pattern of symmetrica] bunches of grapes. Most of the items analyzed were made from complex brass (an alloy with high contents of zinc). The character of this alloy as well as the 'non-local' symbolism of the decoration (grapes) suggest their possible provenience from some regions of Central Asia, Iran or northern India noted by manufacture of complex brass and the grape symbolism.

The hypothesis that particular Gnezdovo mounts may have been manufactured in the northern Caucasus has found so far no confirmation in the evidence we are aware of. These finds are dated to the period not later than the first half of the 9th century (fig. 4). On the contrary, in the late 1st - early 2nd millennium AD the decorations represented on Gnezdovo mounts were widespread in the East - from Central Asia to the trans-Baikal area (fig. 5).

Thus a number of finds certainly of south Siberian provenance, as well as their replicas, have been noted from Eastern Europe. Their comparison with the basic East European materials shows that the belt decorations imported from southern Siberia at the turn of the 1st and 2nd millennia had not influenced any appreciably the technology and artistic features of products of the manufacturing centers which served the needs of local populations (we leave out here the common-Turkic forms of many articles distributed widely throughout Eurasia). Hence we cannot consider any marked influence of south Siberian technological traditions for that period. In the second half of the 11th century, the situation of die predominance of belt mounts from non-ferrous metals in Eastern Europe began to change. Iron belt and harness fittings of characteristic forms, often decorated with inlays and silver applique work, appeared. The most numerous finds come from the Volga area. The emergence of objects of this kind in Eastern Europe is believed to be the result of Volga manufacturing centers having been influenced essentially by a south Siberian culture of the late 10th to 17th¢uries known as the 'Askiz' culture.

The distribution of iron fittings with peculiar working techniques throughout southern Siberia reflects a change of technological traditions in these territories. From the end of the 10th until the middle of the 11th century, bronze articles were substituted almost completely for iron ones with the simultaneous establishment and distribution of techniques of inlaying and application.

It is believed that both the appearance of Askiz iron articles and dissemination of their local imitations in Eastern Europe since the middle and second half of the 11th century implied close contacts between Siberia and Volga Bulgaria. As the technology itself of manufacturing objects of the 'Askiz' circle is concerned, this tradition was superimposed on l¢thocal Volga traditions of working iron, resulting in certain novelty. Having introduced a fashion for such peculiarly decorated articles, this tradition came to be widely distributed. Unlike southern Siberia, however, the new technology had not displaced non-ferrous metals completely in Eastern Europe. Moreover, some bronze parallels of Askiz iron articles have been noted from the Volga area.

Thus studies of south Siberian imports in Eastern Europe of the 10th-13th centuries showed that episodic penetration of south Siberian bronze articles in the middle of the 10th — the second half of the 11th century resulted in no technological innovations in Europe. On the contrary, from the middle and second half of the 11th century, the appearance of south Siberian iron articles of peculiar work entailed considerable technological changes in Eastern Europe that implies the existence of active and continuing contacts.

A.V. Kurbatov. Stages of Settlement of Northern Russia and the Development of Leather-Dressing Handicrafts

New archaeological finds of leather footwear of the 15 th -I7 th centuries in towns of north-western Russia suggest the appearance here of aboriginals from the north. In Staraya Ladoga, Oreshek and Pskov, porshens (kind of leather sandals) of a peculiar cutting have been uncovered in late medieval layers. Their shape and features of cutting and sewing resemble archaeological and ethnographical types of footwear of Arctic peoples. Their emergence in north-western Russian towns implied that a qualitatively new stage of occupation of northern lands by Russian population was taking place. The formation of the Muscovite state opened a new phase in the development of vast regions of Arctic and Siberia and changed the character of Russian colonization of this territory. The Russians were being adapted to the unusually severe climate and adopting new forms of subsistence and economic activities. These historical changes have been reflected in the enrichment of the Russian lexicon with words borrowed from the languages of Arctic peoples.

K. Kh. Kushnareva. New Dating of the Karmirberd Culture in the Caucasus

This paper is devoted to more precise dating of die development of the Karmirberd culture (KBC) and to discussion of its peculiarities.

Most researchers, including until recently the author of this paper, have traditionally considered KBC as the oldest among the system of Middle Bronze Age cultures of the southern Caucasus. It was dated most commonly to the centuries around the turn of the 3rd and 2nd millennium ВС. the lower limit being shifted back by some scholars even to the 23rd century ВС.

At present, the accumulation of principally new evidence has already lead to certain reestablishment of the dates of the Middle Bronze Age complexes known. As a result, the problem of chronological revision of KBC also has become urgent. The reasons for this urgency are as follows. 1) Re-dating of the sites of the 'period of flourishing' of the Bedeni-Trialeti community (BTC), which now is placed firmly to within the time span from the last centuries of the 3rd millennium ВС to the l9th-28th centuries ВС (Кушнарева, Рысин 2001). 2) The necessity to explain the phenomenon of coexistence of KBC sites and 'royal' kurgans of BTC of its 'period of flourishing' in the southern Transcaucasia. This problem arose in consequence of re-dating of the kurgans of the "period of flourishing' to an earlier period and discovery of similar harrows within the same region of Armenia, viz. Karashamb. Kirovokan. Aruch, Nerkin-Naver etc., from where also concentrations of Karmirberd sites (unanimously dated previously to the same period) have been reported. 3) Due to the absence of reliable Near East parallels which would be helpful in dating KBC it is urgent to re-consider in details the finds of grave offerings from Karmirberd burials in order to recover additional information.

The commonest evidence of KBC was found to be ware with peculiar painting (black paint against red background) accompanied in burials by black-burnished pottery with variable comb-stamped designs (running spirals, semi-arches drawn inside each other, hanging volutes, and double 'rings').

It seems that the oldest sites of KBC appeared in the late 18th-17th century in die Ararat valley. Here their greatest concentrations are found and here they existed throughout a certain period in their 'pure' form (i.e. devoid of Sevan-Uzerlik transitional artifacts or Late Bronze Age ones). An example of 'pure' complexes is burials No. 25 and 26 at the cemetery of Verin-Naver. Later, pottery of the Sevan-Uzerlik type (also painted, but in another style with garlands of obliquely hatched rhombuses predominating among the motifs) started to appear in previously 'pure' burials. Occasionally, the latter contained also vessels of the transitional period (jugs painted after baking, vessels in the form of 'coconut', incense-burners with slots) or single items of the Late Bronze Age ware (cooking pots with sunflower-seed, finger-nail or wedge-shaped designs).

Analysis of the archaeological evidence enables us to date the appearance of final sites of KBC belonging to the stage of transition to the Late Bronze Age. Most probably, they are to be dated to the 15lh century ВС, some perhaps to the early 14th century, since the most common opinion holds that in the 14th –12th century ВС the Late Bronze Age period in pottery-making begins in the Caucasus. Painting vanishes and the amount of combed decorations diminishes. Vanished has with few exceptions such ware as jugs with swastika and meander motifs painted after baking, incense-burners and vessels in the form of 'coconut'.

Let us touch upon some additional evidence that confirms indirectly the dating of KBC proposed above. Firstiy a Hurri-Mitanni seal from Large Kurgan no. V in Shamiram must be mentioned here, as well as faience beads from rich female burial no. 12 at Verin-Naver, a sword with frame hilt from burial no. 19 of the same cemetery and bronze horse-bits from a barrow in Oshakan.

The material expression of the phase of transition between the Middle and Late Bronze Age in the southern area of the Transcaucasia (late 15th - early 14th century ВС) according to our observations is focused in the following peculiarities.

This was a period of technological change in pottery-making which resulted in the appearance of vessels of new types (cooking pots decorated with wedges, fingernail pinches and sunflower-seed designs). In 'pure' (early) complexes of KBC such ware is absent.

At the same time, the pottery continued to be manufactured among which painted vessels of the Sevan-Uzerlik type started to appear. The complexes mentioned above show that vessels painted in the Sevan-Uzerlik style made their appearance in the second half of the period of development of KBC.

During that short time span new and previously unknown types of pottery emerged and disappeared shortly after (vessels with bicoloured swastika or meander designs painted with paste after baking, vases on hollow stems, vessels in the form of 'coconut', two-funnelled and box-shaped incense-burners with slots), as well as new techniques of decoration (comb-stamped impresses rubbed-down with white or red paste, patterned burnish, painting after baking). The rare vessels showing these peculiarities are indicators of the transitional period.

The brevity of that period is demonstrated by the absence of similar types of ware both in 'pure' (early) burials of KBC and in complexes of the Late Bronze Age.

Thus the Karmirberd culture replaced the Bedeni-Trialeti cultural entity of the 'period of flourishing'. The latter has now firmly occupied the chronological position (22nd-19th/18th centuries ВС) suggested previously for KBC.

No direct genetic ties are traceable between 'royal' kurgans of the 'period of flourishing' and burials of KBC because in the former there are signs neither of Karmirberd nor Sevan-Uzerlik artefacts, to say nothing of the Late Bronze Age ones, and vice versa. This fact suggests that bearers of KBC, of whom the painted ware was so characteristic, were incomers from the south (where the tradition of painting pottery dates back to millennia before) who occupied first the Ararat Valley and the nearest spurs of Mount Aragats.

Eventually, the Ararat Valley being overpopulated, the first wave of the intruders possibly moved northwest to the fertile plateau of what was historical Shirak. In burials of the latter, round pots and bowls typical to that culture, both painted (broad friezes with metopes) and black-bumished ones (with stamped dotted designs), continued to appear. Simultaneously, part of black-burnished ware was there modified resulting in what is, in our opinion, a local peculiarity of the pottery-making of Shirak during the period under consideration.

Still later, possibly by the same reason of overpopulation, another part of the Karmirberdians moved to the western bank of Lake Sevan where they left their burials with pottery of the period of transition to the Late Bronze Age stage as well as rare vessels of the Late Bronze Age proper. Also the so-called Sevan-Uzerlik ware appeared in these burials. Afterwards, the bearers of the Karmirberd culture advanced still farther east to the Karabakh steppe where they founded a number of settlements. The period of the existence of KBC in the southern Caucasus should be thus dated to about the end of the 18th - beginning of the 14th century ВС.

M. B. Rysin. Relations between the Caucasus and the Steppes of Volga and Ural Area during the Early and Middle Bronze Age in the 4th-2nd Millennia BC

Relations with the Caucasus were important to die steppe zone of south-eastern Europe since during the Early and Middle Bronze Age (further abbreviated as EBA and MBA correspondingly) the Caucasian centre of cultural genesis was the leading one for the entire region (Бочкарев 1991). The influence of the Caucasus was supported primarily by its rich natural resources and close connections of its inhabitants with the leading civilizations of the Near East The unique position of the Caucasus at the intersection of ancient routes made this region a translator of advances of the Ancient East and its own innovations to the steppe zone and further throughout the entire Eastern Europe.

During the recent decades, new evidence has been obtained allowing us to supplement A. A. Iessen's scheme of the periods of Caucasian metal working by an additional phase, viz. the Uspensky stage antecedent to that of Privolnesky.

Relations of the Caucasus with the Volga basin during the Early Bronze Age were expressed predominantly in distribution of the advanced Caucasian technology of manufacture of shaft-hole chopper-shaped axes. The technique was casting into a mould of many pieces open from the ventral part. During the EBA, the Maikop technology of metalworking in the north and north-east did not spread beyond the limits of the Lower Volga area. Moreover, rare imitations of Caucasian chopper-like shaft-hole axes arc found only near the main water artery - the Volga River. The population of the Volga-Ural region used local copper ores.

At the initial stage of the Middle Bronze Age, the influence of the Caucasian metalworking became considerably more widespread having reached the northern

borders of the steppe zone and regions to the west of the Urals. The change of the character of interrelations was expressed in the expansion of the range of articles of Caucasian types in the steppe zone. These articles included Caucasian amulets/ornaments found among funerary offerings throughout the area from the Dnieper River to the Urals. The wide distribution of these objects in the beginning of the MBA suggests that some cultural and ideological continuity existed in the steppe zone. Indeed, their presence among grave goods undoubtedly was connected with the rites of transition which lay in the foundations of religious beliefs of traditional societies. Later, at the Privolnensky stage of the MBA, products of Caucasian workshops and their imitations were as before widespread in the north-western Caucasus and Lower Don regions. In the north and north-east, the area of the distribution of Caucasian types of metalwork shrank to within the limits of the Lower Volga region. Eventually, in the final MBA, articles of Caucasian types were found only in Ciscaucasia and the Lower Don region. During that period, the influence of the Caucasian centre of metalworking in the steppe zone subsided almost completely. The kindred cultural environment permeable to the distribution of Caucasian technological and ideological innovations also was reduced to within the limits of the Lower Volga region. This was probably connected with the formation of a new Volga-Ural centre of cultural genesis in the Late Bronze Age (Бочкарев 1991). The reduction of the Caucasian influence in die steppe zone and the extinction of activities of the Caucasian centre of cultural genesis may be explained primarily by the rupture of southern connections and decline of the supply of innovations from Ciscaucasia.

Most researchers, including until recently the author of this paper, have traditionally considered KBC as the oldest among the system of Middle Bronze Age cultures of the southern Caucasus. It was dated most commonly to the centuries around the turn of the 3
