V. E. Shchelinsky. The Middle Palaeolithic Complex of the Site of Shiroky Mys (the Black Sea Coast of the Northwest Caucasus)

The site of Shyroky Mys on the Black Sea coast of the northwestern Caucasus first appeared in the literature as a large Upper Palaeolithic site of the Aurignacian type (Щелинский 2004). However, there are actually two Palaeolithic layers of different periods at the site: the upper one is an Upper Palaeolithic layer, and the lower is connected with the eroded fossil crust and contains artefacts of the Middle Palaeolithic period. Between those two layers, a chronological break is clearly identifiable being represented by a stage of intensive erosion of the layer with Middle Palaeolithic materials. That stage preceded the accumulation of the layer with Upper Palaeolithic cultural remains.

Middle Palaeolithic finds from the site of Shyroky Mys, both uncovered in situ during excavations and collected on the surface, compose a single archaeological complex. In the geological aspects it belongs to the Upper Pleistocene and is dated most probably to the period of formation of the Karangat deposits on the Caucasian Black Sea littoral (corresponding presumably to OIS 5c). This complex of artefacts is characteristic of short-term campsites of Middle Palaeolithic hunters since it includes fairly few stone tools, mostly selected spalls and tools with secondary retouch. Moreover, there is no doubt that these tools are only slightly worn in use. The industry represented by the complex under consideration was based mostly on local raw materials. At the same time, of considerable importance in it was flint “imported” from the more distant regions of the Caucasian Black Sea coast situated at least 100 km to the south (the nearest may have been the surroundings of what is now the city of Sochi, and the more remote was the territory of Abkhaziya). Those regions, it seems, were periodically visited by Middle Palaeolithic hunters from Shyroky Mys making part of the entire territory exploited by them during their seasonal migrations. The industry under consideration is of markedly Levallois character but without blade-making (the collection includes only single blades). Primary knapping of stone was aimed at manufacture of Levallois flakes including fairly numerous Levallois points. The typological specifics of this industry are distinctly demonstrated also by the concurrence of quantitatively representative and diverse artefacts of the Levallois types and individual but fairly expressive bifacial tools (keilmesser and handaxes). The presence of the latter is a characteristic attribute of Acheulian industries. Moreover, the manufacturing technique and the types of the handaxes represented in the assemblage undoubtedly suggest its belonging to the final Acheulian tradition that agrees well with its fairly late geological age (Early Valdai or Early Würm).

G.V. Sinitsyna. Raw Materials as Chronological Indications for the Stone Age Sites on the Valday Hills

The development of the chronological scale for sites of the final Palaeolithic in the north-west of the Russian plain is as yet at its initial stage. Until recently, the main method of determination of the cultural and chronological belonging of the sites has been that of comparison. This level of the studies is determined mostly by the poor preservation of the habitation materials at final Palaeolithic sites owing to the soil erosion. The archaeological evidence of that epoch is represented most commonly by mixed complexes.

The significance of the sites of Podol III/1, Podol III/2 and Baranova Gora on the northern banks of Lake Volgo in Tver oblast is therefore due to the fact that cultural layers are partly preserved here: those of the late Bølling (phases of the Late Glacial increase in warmth; 12,800-12,300 b.p.), Middle Dryas, Allerød, Younger Dryas and Pre-Boreal. The dating of these layers by pollen analyses is confirmed by palaeomagnetic and geochemical studies and correlates well with the results of comparative typological analysis of the material culture. In each of the cultural levels, the use of only local Valday raw materials has been recorded.

The lower layer at the site of Baranova Gora is dated to the period of transition between the Pleistocene and Holocene (Bølling). During that period, diverse local raw materials were used. The flaking techniques by means of hard and soft hammers were fairly well developed. The commonest types of blanks were wide blades and microblades. The finds included combinated tools. The highly developed blade industry links the site of Baranova Gora of the Bølling period with the sites of the transitional period in the Russian plain: Zolotoruchye I and Vashana.

The artefacts from the Dryas II deposits at the campsite of Baranova Gora present a new type of material culture in the microregion under consideration. Only one kind of flint was used here. Of the flaking technique the use of “soft” hammer is characteristic. The typical blanks were thin blades up to 1 cm wide, 1-2 mm thick and 3-6 cm long. For the secondary trimming, bifacial retouching of the most of a blank has been established. Tools with backs became widespread. Parallels are found among materials from the site of Akulovo in the Udomlya region, Tver oblast.

The Allerød and Dryas III periods are represented by artefacts of the Podolsk culture of the Bromme technocomplex (the Allerød deposits at the site of Baranova Gora and the sites of Podol III/1 and Podol III/2. The main type of blanks was blade with the length of 6-8 cm, width 2-2.5 cm and thickness up to 1 cm made with the hard-hammer technique. Tools from all sites of the Bromme-Lyngby technocomplex were manufactured using exclusively the local raw-material base.

The rise of migration processes at the turn of the epochs under conditions of sharp climatic changes is traceable throughout entire Europe including the Russian plain. In this connection of importance is the character of the raw materials used. At present, throughout the Valday area, making of tools only from the local flint has been recorded suggesting high adaptation abilities of the population here.

During the Mesolithic and Neolithic epochs, local raw flint from different Valday deposits was used. The diversity of the raw materials may be traced through the compositions of the “hoards” found at sites of the Mesolithic to Eneolithic periods. The so-called “tool-kits” (hoards) attest the transportation of flint and developed exchange.

An accumulation from the site of Podol III/1 contained tools made from the local raw material of a single type – brown spotted flint. This assemblage is of a fairly uniform composition and has parallels among materials of the Eneolithic site of Stan I. The latter fact suggests that on the Valday Hills an advanced Eneolithic culture was widespread which continued the exchange in raw materials started in the Mesolithic period.

N. B. Vasil′eva, A. V. Suvorov. Dwelling no. 3 at the Eneolithic Settlement of Pavshino-3 on the Yug River: Technology of Flintwork

Flint is among the minerals most widely used throughout the entire Stone Age by populations of the European forest zone. Various methods of working flint were employed having in no way been limited by any techniques of mechanical treatment of the blank. A specific approach for working raw flint included its thermal pretreatment for easier flaking. Such a method was practised by Eneolithic population of the site of Pavshino-2.

This site, situated in the valley of the Yug River (Velikoustyugsky region of Vologda Oblast), was discovered and investigated in 1989-1995 under the direction of S. Yu. Vasil′ev by an expedition of the Science and Production Centre “Antiquities of the North” (city of Vologda). At the settlement, the remains of five semi-dugout dwellings were found, three of which have been excavated. On the basis of the artefacts and construction peculiarities of the dwellings, the population that left this site has been attributed to the Garinsko-Borskaya circle of cultures In this paper we discuss the assemblage of flint objects yielded by excavation of Dwelling no. 3 in 1995. The collection of artefacts from that semi-dugout comprises over 30 thousand items: flint tools and numerous debris from their manufacture, fragments of porous ceramics, accumulations of crashed pottery, and occasionally objects made from pure copper. Three radiocarbon dates have been obtained for Dwelling no. 3, but only two of them are acceptable: 4000±100 and 3920±110 BP (uncalibrated).

The flint industry of Pavshino-3 was oriented mainly toward the production of bifacial objects (arrowheads, dart-heads and knives) in the technique of bifacial pressure-flaking. The predominant majority of these tools show traits peculiar to thermal pretreatment of the raw material. Examination of numerous finished tools and those left for some reasons unfinished, as well as of the abundant debitage related with their manufacture, has enabled us to reconstruct roughly the process of making bifaces and to establish at what stage the heating of flint took place.

The blanks used for making bifaces in the Eneolithic industry of Pavshino-2 were primary flakes specially produced from large flint pebbles (stage 1). These were then flattened by preparatory flaking (stage 2). Occasionally, these bifacial blanks retained their crust on both sides. Hence, in some cases flint bars of suitable size were used as blanks. Preparation of the blanks at the second stage was conducted probably in order to accelerate heating since flattened lumps of flint are fired quicker. The third stage of working was the heating procedure proper which was carried out possibly by putting the blank under a bonfire for a time. As shown by the composition of the debris, after firing the blank was worked depending on its state both by flaking fairly large chips from its surface and its finishing by pressure retouch.

T. V. Kornienko. Cult Installations at Tepe Gawra of the Ubaid Period

The leading role in establishment of a unified type of early archaic temple structures in Mesopotamia belonged to the Ubaid culture. In the pre-Sumer period this culture had spread from the south throughout the entire land between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The Ubaid expansion northwards was predominantly of a peaceful character. The cultural assimilation of the central and, later, northern regions was accompanied by adaptation of the Ubaid complex to the local traditions of Samarra and Halaf. That process was reflected inter alia in peculiarities of the construction, locations and functions of the public religious installations in the Upper Mesopotamia. This is well attested by comparison of particular materials from levels XIX-XII of Tepe Gawra with the evidence from the corresponding layers of Abu Shahrain, Warka and Tell Abad. An important distinction has been noted, in particular, between the topographical characteristics of cult buildings of the Ubaid period at Eridu and Uruk in the south of Mesopotamia and those of Tepe Gawra in the north (Oates, Oates 1976: 132; Aurenche 1982: 239-243; Oates 1987: 299-383). Indeed, the former two sites are noted for the tradition of building temples at the same place over a long period with inclusion of the ruins of preceding structures into the foundations of the newly built ones. This practice finally resulted in the appearance of platforms and, later, ziggurats. In Tepe Gawra, by contrast, no such customs were observed. Occasionally, attempts to reconstruct some unordinary structures were really noted at Tepe Gawra, but in each case the succession of cult buildings erected one upon another was interrupted, the appearance of the uncommon edifices or even the very layout of the settlement having been changed. Meanwhile, the complexes of Ubaid and post-Ubaid materials from Tepe Gawra suggest that during the epoch under consideration that settlement was an important post of exchange and the local communities were thriving. This fact must evidently have propitiated a high level of cultural assimilation and openness of the local society to external influences. The latter included, in particular, influences from the southerner regions of Mesopotamia wherefrom the very idea of building public religious structures of ‘three-piece’ plan had probably been adopted. Construction of the buildings of the ‘acropolis’ with refined decorations and sophisticated layouts in Level XIII at Tepe Gawra is an impressive example of the cultural borrowing. The spread of the already established tradition of temple-building to the north was followed by alienation of this tradition from its origins. Thus for the northern settlements which adopted it, the location of the public religious buildings may at first have been of no importance. Only after an interval, continuity in the choice of the place for building temples had become traditional in cities of Upper Mesopotamia. Aside from the mentioned distinctions concerned with the locations of cult buildings at the sites under consideration, temples of Tepe Gawra differ in a number of construction details and their interior from similar structures at Eridu, Uruk, and Tell Abad. The revealed peculiarities confirm the fact that simultaneously with the common Mesopotamian building traditions, some local ones existed here during the Ubaid period. In terms of various categories of finds Tepe Gawra has reflected the development of the northern Ubaid variant. A sacrificial well under the floor in the Northern Temple of Level XIII and a compact accumulation of burials within the area of separate prominent buildings have been revealed at this site and in Building A at Tell Abad. These finds agree with the well known practice of extra-ordinary burials and sacrificial construction in the foundations of buildings of public importance or nearby. This practice existed at early agricultural settlements of upper and middle Mesopotamia already during the period antecedent to the Ubaid epoch. The revealed local features of the functioning of religious public buildings at Tepe Gawra principally do not run counter the well known idea about the spread of the unified Ubaid cultural traditions, including those in the religious architecture, throughout the entire territory of Mesopotamia during the pre-Sumer period.

Kasparov A. K. New Evidence on the Fauna of Altyn-Depe. Some Details of the Evolution of the Animal Husbandry in Proto-Urban Communities

In archaeological practice, fauna! remains are a source of very important information not only on the structure of animal husbandry and the meat diet of a settlement, but also on the development of social relations and the extent of the social differentiation. In some cases, they are helpful to reveal the layout of the site under studies.

All the more important are studies of osteological collections from long-lived sites investigated on a high scholarly level since these collections reflect the cultural evolution of an entire region for a long period of time. The settlement of Altyn-Depe in southern Turkmenia is undoubtedly a site of this type. It is situated about 200 km south-east of Ashkhabad directly near the village of Meana.

At present, a new and fairly extensive collection of osteological materials has been yielded by this archaeological site of a worldwide significance. These materials have been gathered by the present author during the field seasons of 1987, 1989, 1991, 1992 and 1995. The dates are from the Late Aeneolithic or Geoksyur period.

Generally characterized, Altyn-Depe is a site with a complicated economical system dominated by a number of factors: the continuous aridification of the climate, variation of the numbers of kulan (Asiatic wild ass), considerable increase of the livestock of small cavicorns and the expansion of stock-breeding economy.

The fauna! composition, the percentage of the osteological remains, the assemblage of skeletal elements and their taphonomy came to be different in different areas of the site having been determined by the beginning social differentiation.

On the whole, there was a highly developed animal husbandry at Altyn-Depe while hunting was rather of a secondary importance. Breeding numerous herds of domesticated animals (as well, perhaps, as owning them) was to a large extent a prerogative of those members of the community who possessed a fairly high social status. Hunting was an occupation of people of rather lower social grades and it was to become an entertainment of privileged classes only by the end of the Bronze Age.

S. N. Leont’ev. Pottery of the Andronoid Type in the Upper Reaches of the Tuba River

According to the views generally accepted now, the tribes of the Andronovo culture in the Khakassia-Minusinsk region had not advanced southwards and south-eastwards farther than the mouth of the Tuba River while the entire basin of that river, as far as the foothills of the East Sayan Mountains, continued in population by the descendants of the people of the Okunev culture. It should be noted that the area from the middle course of the Tuba as far as its upper reaches formed by three mountain taiga rivers – Kizir, Kazyr and Amyl – is the “blank spot” on the archaeological map of the Khakassia-Minusinsk region. Only in 2000-2005, owing to the works of the Expedition of the Minusinsk Regional Museum named after N. M. Mart’yanov, the first ancient sites were discovered here. It was found that their utmost number was concentrated around the village of Tayaty of the Karatuz region of the Krasnoyarsk kray – in the mountain and taiga locality cut through by the valley of the Kazyr River taking its origins at the joint of the East and West Sayan ranges.

At one of the sites, which received the serial name of Tayaty IV, several groups of camps of ancient hunters and fishers were found. During our excavations, we uncovered here, along with materials of the Neolithic epoch, Bronze Age, early Iron Age and Middle Ages, also seven fragmentary vessels of the Andronovo appearance. That pottery was not actually that of Andronovo culture proper as suggested by certain technological peculiarities of its manufacture as well as by the character of the surface of the fragments uncovered. In terms of the features mentioned, only one of the vessels was almost identical to the chronologically adjacent pottery of the Yenisey steppes. All the other, on the contrary, have here no parallels neither among the materials of the Andronovo culture nor even among the Okunev or Karasuk pottery. The emergence of this type of ware on the East Sayans probably resulted of a powerful cultural influence exerted by tribes of Andronovo migrants onto the autochtonous population on the upper Tuba River. Hence we have grounds to suppose that in the mid-2nd millennium BC, a culture of a new, Andronoid, type developed in the foothills of the East Sayan Mountains. Sites of that culture, which would come to be more representative than that of Tayaty IV excavated by us, are probably still awaiting their discovery.

A. V. Polyakov. Palm-ended Pendants from Burials of the Karasuk Culture

Palm-ended pendants are among the most noteworthy elements of the Karasuk culture. Nevertheless, they are fairly uncommon in Karasuk burials and settlement sites. The works published so far on these objects are based mostly on the chance finds widely represented in museum collections in southern Siberia and elsewhere. Meanwhile, new tendencies have appeared concerning the volume and structure of the evidence accumulated and our knowledge about the Karasuk culture. This fact allows us to return to the discussion of this subject in expectation of new advances.

At present, we know already 80 Karasuk burials with finds of palmed pendants which amount to a total of 199 examples. This enables us now to base our studies predominantly on complexes of high informational validity rather than on chance finds as before. The main objective of the present article is to publish the scientific information on the mentioned complexes and to make an attempt at their primary interpretation.

A statistical analysis of all of the known finds of palmed pendants from Karasuk graves has confirmed their belonging exclusively to female funerary garments. Consideration of the age data has shown that women of all ages, including children, were accompanied by these ornaments. At the same time, the burials where the pendants were uncovered in situ suggest three manners of their use: as hair ornaments (mostly interwoven in braids), on footwear and as parts of necklaces or breast sets. Possibly, this variability reflected certain ethnical differences among the Karasuk populations.

The palmed pendants were in use for a fairly long period of time overlapping the later part of the ‘classical’ stage and the entire Kamennolozhsky one (Late Bronze Age), as well as the earlier period of the Bainov stage of the Tagar culture (Scythian period).

During the ‘classic’ stage of the Karasuk culture, these ornaments were not regularly distributed throughout its area. Their highest concentration has been revealed in burials near the place where the Abakan River flows into the Yenisey (the ‘Minusinsky concentration’). The farther from that place one moves the less numerous become gradually the burials and the number of pendants found in them. In the northern regions only single finds of them are known. Later, at the Kamennolozhsky stage of the culture, this disproportion vanished.

Studies of the geography of distribution of the pendants have localized the concentration of the examples with four palms in the south-western area of the Minusinsk depressions (the Askiz region of the Republic of Khakassia). Outside that zone, none of them has been found in Karasuk burials. Two other four-palmed pendants are reported from the territory of Tuva suggesting close contacts between the two regions.

An examination of a wide group of evidence has confirmed E.B. Vadetskaya’s supposition of a similar significance of palmed pendants and triangular plaques with punched design. Peculiar combination pendants hold an intermediate position connecting the two types of female ornaments into a single developmental line.

A critical analysis of the existing now theories suggests the absence of any deeply enrooted semantics of palmed pendants among the Karasuk people. Most probably, they considered these items simply as ornaments of women’s garments.

Recent dating has confirmed the opinion of S.A. Teploukhov and M.P. Gryaznov who tied the origin of Karasuk palmed pendants with the earliest Andronovo samples from Kazakhstan.

E. Stepanova. Evolution of Horse Gear and the Relative Chronology of Sites of the Pazyryk Culture

This paper presents an analysis of assemblages of horse gear from typical kurgans of the Pazyryk culture. The sampling examined included finds from 14 barrows at six burial grounds (table 1). These burials contained 129 horse skeletons; also parts of at least 85 saddles and 112 bridles were preserved. The sampling was based on 9 barrows with dendrochronological dates available for comparison. One of the kurgans (Pazyryk, barrow 2) was radiocarbon dated to a narrow range of 290-300 BC. In order to extend the sampling, considered were also finds from the barrows regarded by most of the researchers as the earlier (Bashadar, barrow 2, Tuekta, barrow 2) and younger (Shibe, Karakol) monuments of the Pazyryk culture. In addition, taken into consideration was the 6th Pazyryk kurgan dated by a mirror of the “Qin” type found in it to a period not earlier than 311 BC. The sites enumerated above are noted for the fine preservation of the organics enabling us to interpret reliably separate parts of the horse trappings. Moreover, they yielded fairly expressive typological series of the elements of gear which at ordinary sites are commonly represented only by single items. These facts allow us to regard the mentioned sites as the standard ones. Examination of the complexes of horse gear from these standard kurgans has enabled us to divide the latter into three chronological groups differing in the furnishings, bridle and saddle decorations, as well as in the funerary rite of the horse burials (tables 2-7; figs. 4-7, 9-16, 18).

Features of the1st chronological group.

1. Rich amounts of bronze furnishings and ornamental parts (table 7).

2. Two-piece saddle-girth fastenings are the typical saddle furnishings. These fastenings consist of a loop used as a pulley and buckles with a fixed bar bent inwards. They are represented by three varieties (figs 4-7; 12: 1-3; table 2). The “bronze loop-buckle” and “bone loop-buckle” variants have been found only among group 1. Recorded exclusively in group 1 have been also bronze saddle-girth buckles with the bar bent outwards (used as the pulleys were the frames of the buckles) (figs. 4: 1; 7: 1).

3. Characteristic of the horse burials is the presence of complete saddle sets including the saddle-girths with buckles.

4. The ornaments of the bridles and breast-plates are characterized by large wooden pendants in the form of asymmetrical leaves, palmettes, griffin heads, feline beasts of prey and elks. The base of the pendants is shaped like a circle or an elongated plank. The terminals of the cheek-pieces were decorated with the same motifs as the pendants.

5. Saddles typically had decorative coverings with flame-like edge, bladed pendants, felt “medallions” on semicircular projections in the front and rear parts of the cushions, bunches of straps with pendants in the rear of the saddle, sets of plates (S-shaped, sickle-shaped, circular, shaped like commas or four-petalled rosettes).

Bronze two-piece girth fastenings and side-rein blocks from kurgans of group 1 have parallels at sites of the Early Scythian period (figs. 1, 2, 14: 1-5). Most of the analogues (bronze and bone two-piece girth fastenings (fig. 3), bronze and iron bits with circular terminals, bronze pendants with asymmetrical leaves) come from sites of the end of the Early Scythian period in the Altai or nearby regions. At present these sites are dated to the second half of the 6th – beginning of the 5th century BC. However, furnishings from there included in addition three-hole cheek-pieces, bronze and bone strap-dividers and bronze fastenings of the throatlashes which in the 1st chronological group are already absent. Ornaments of the horse gear of group 1 reflect the evolution of only some of the elements represented at transitional sites (iron cramps and tablets with transversal cylinders plated with gold – imitations of the bronze spacer-rings and wooden comma-shaped plates-clasps). The S-shaped cheek-pieces with zoomorphic terminals from kurgans of group 1 have parallels at sites of the northern Black Sea area of the 5th century BC.

Features of the 2nd chronological group.

1. The use of bronze was limited to making bronze bits (about 8% of the sample).

2. Saddle-girth fastenings were mostly of bone with an outturned bar, however the combination type of two-piece fastenings with leather loops also continued in use (figs. 9; 12: 3, 4; 18: 1-2).

3. Most of the saddles from the burials have no girth fastenings (table 2).

4. In the decorations of the bridles and saddles, elements of the ornamentation both of groups 1 and 3 are combined suggesting the transitional character of the sites of group 2 (figs. 15, 16; tables 4-6).

The horse gear of the 2nd group lacks the elements of furnishings rooted back to the Early Scythian period. The replacement of the type of two-piece girth fastenings with the one-piece examples gives us a possibility to synchronize the sites of group 2 with those situated in other regions of the Eurasian steppes of the 4th century BC (fig. 8).

Features of the 3rd chronological group.

1. The furnishings are close to those of group 2 in a number of characteristics: the limited use of bronze (bits, rods of the cheek-pieces, certain small parts of the ornaments), predominant use of one-piece bone girth fastenings, preservation of the variant of two-piece fastenings with leather loops (strengthened with bone mounts – fig. 13), and the absence of fastenings on most of the saddles buried (figs. 9, 11, 5, 16; tables 2-7).

2. Saddle bracings and complicated side-rein blocks (fig. 14: 9-16) are found only at sites of this group.

3. Of the decoration of bridles and breast-plates characteristic are figured wooden plates while pendants were not used.

4. The main elements of the decoration of saddles were shield-like pendants and arched or lens-shaped mounts on the semicircular projections on the front and rear of the cushions of wood, bone and leather (fig. 11).

The girth buckles and complicated blocks have analogues at sites of the Hunnic-Sarmatian period. Shield-shaped pendants similar to the Pazyryk ones are found at sites of the Qin and Western Han dynasties (late 3rd – 1st century BC) (fig. 17). Numnahs with breast covers from kurgan 5 at Pazyryk are similar in their appearance to the ancient Iranian horse-rugs for riding which were used not later than the 3rd century BC (they are not found at sites of the Arshakid dynasty).

In horse burials of the 2nd and 3rd groups, damaging or lack of accompanying grave-goods has been noted: most of the saddles were buried without a saddle-girth and girth buckles, the girth straps are tied together, tied into knots or cut out (table 2; figs. 11, 18).

Conclusions. The horse trappings from standard sites of the Pazyryk culture are dated by dendrochronological and absolute methods, as well as on the basis of the parallels mentioned above, to within the bracket of the 5th – 3rd centuries BC. The chronological groups of the horse gear distinguished within the culture in question may be tentatively dated as follows:

Group 1 — 5th (second half of the 5th) – beginning (first half) of the 4th century BC.

Group 2 — second half of the 4th – early 3rd century BC.

Group 3— second quarter – the end of the 3rd century BC.

N. A. Gavrilyuk. Black-Glazed Kylikes and Kantharoi from Steppe Scythian Burials

The present paper is aimed at clarification of the peculiar use of black-glazed ware among the Scythians, as well as determination of the regions which imported either single ‘vessels for drinking wine’ or consignments of these objects and the chronological framework of those imports.

Of the 3,000 steppe Scythian burials so far excavated, black-glazed ware has been found in 221 that is 13 percent of all the steppe Scythian graves with pottery.

Now certain suppositions have been published on the chronological frames and quantities of kantharoi and kylikes imported to Steppe Scythia. The first black-glazed vessels, viz. stemmed kylikes, appeared in the Scythian steppe in the first half of the 5th century BC. Those were single objects imported both to the steppe and forest-steppe zones of the northern Black Sea area. Only in the last quarter of the 5th century, with the appearance of thick-walled kylikes in the steppe, we may speak about importing consignments of these goods. Thin-walled kylikes only occasionally entered steppe Scythia where they are sometimes found in graves of the first half of the 4th century BC. Kantharoi-kylikes occur in steppe Scythian burials throughout the middle and third quarter of the 4th century BC. Kantharoi with a thickened hollow rim were imported to the steppe since the mid-4th century BC remaining in use until the early 3rd century. The rich collection of kantharoi-kylikes and kantharoi from steppe Scythian burials suggests mass imports of this type of black-glazed ware.

Mapping of black-glazed kylikes and kantharoi gives us grounds to speak about certain peculiarities of their distribution. Until the mid-4th century BC those were predominantly occasional imports. In the first half of the 4th century BC, a small consignment of thick-walled kylikes was brought to the Scythians of the steppe left-bank zone of the Dnieper River (the Kamensky ecological and economical region). Kantharos-shaped kylikes were imported to the regions of the settlement-sites of Kamenskoye and Kapulovskoye and to the Crimea. The majority of kantharoi has been found in the Kapulovsky ecological and economical region.

Studies of the occurrence of kylikes and kantharoi in male and female graves suggest the long use of these vessels. Initially they were used by men for drinking wine. In female burials they were occasionally accompanied by spindles, spindle-whorls and mirrors. It seems that also during the life-time, drinking vessels which had become worthless were handed over to women and used by the latter as cases to keep spindle-whorls, needles or occasionally beads. The same peculiarity is observed in rich Scythian burials.

M. Yu. Vakhtina, R. V. Stoyanov. New Data on the Necropolis of Porthmion (archaeological excavations of 2003-2005). The Necropolis of Porthmion of the Classical Period (archaeological excavations of 2003-2005)

This paper deals with systematization of finds from the necropolis of the ancient city of Porthmion. In 2003-2005, the Porthmion Group of the Bosporan Archaeological Expedition of IIMK RAS carried out archaeological surveys and subsequent excavations west of the townsite. The investigations were located on the northern slope of a wide balka (gully) ranged westwards. The area of the necropolis lowers down towards the south being limited by two narrow balkas extended in the north–south direction. Here, several funerary complexes have been revealed and information obtained which allows us to identify more precisely the boundaries and the dates of functioning of the necropolis.

This paper deals with systematization of finds from the necropolis of Porthmion – one of the so-called “small-cities” of the European Bosporus (fig. 1: 3). The studies at the site are regularly conducted by the Porthmion Group of the Bosporan Archaeological Expedition of the Institute of the History of Material Culture (IIMK), RAS. Despite the researches of many years carried out here by all of the excavators of the Porthmion townsite, its necropolis until recently has been unknown.

Archaeological surveys and subsequent excavations conducted in 2003-2005 west of the townsite have resulted in discovery of a few burial complexes and yielded information which allows us to identify more precisely the boundaries and the dates of functioning of the necropolis. The excavations were located on the northern slope of a wide balka (gully) ranged westwards. The area of the necropolis lowers down here towards the south being limited by two narrow balkas extended in the north–south direction (fig. 1).

Crypt no. 1 (fig. 3), of rectangular form, was oriented east–west. The upper part of its construction was totally destroyed by ploughing up for planting and by grave-robbers. The dromos, measuring 1,5 x 2,1 m, was located on the west of the structure and composed of two rectangular stone blocks set in the orthostatic position. The floor of the dromos was made of densely packed clayey layer 0.25–0.3 m thick. A noteworthy structural peculiarity of the vault was the entrance from the dromos to the burial chamber. The burial cell was a slab box of rectangular plan measuring 2.4 x 1.7 m. In the spoils thrown out from the pit dug out by the robbers were found fragmentary human bones, sherds of table- and cooking ware of local manufacture dated to the 3rd – mid-2nd century BC (fig. 7), and an anthropomorphic gravestone (fig. 6 а–с). The collection of finds from this crypt (fig. 9) enables us to date its use to the beginning of the 2nd and 1st century BC.

Under the stones blocking-up the entrance to the dromos, uncovered was a burial (fig. 4: 1) with grave goods dated to the 2nd-1st century BC.

Crypt 2 (fig. 3) was situated 5 m south-east of Crypt 1. The structure was poorly disturbed by deep ploughing-up and grave-robbers. The totally destroyed dromos seemed to have been once located in the western section of the structure. The burial chamber of rectangular plan was measuring 2.4 x 1.9 m. The finds found in the soil thrown-out by robbers, in the fill of the vault and on the floor of the burial chamber (fig. 10) suggest that the structure was used in the second half of the 2nd – 1st century BC.

The two crypts both belong to the type of slab-built structures which appeared in the Bosporus in the 4th century BC. Systematic studies of the Porthmion necropolis will undoubtedly supplement the information on the development of that “small city” during different phases of its existence, as well as the evidence on the peculiarities of the funerary rite in this nook of the Greek oikoumene.

Skrzhinskaya M. V. Representations of Plants and their Significance in Pieces of Art of the 6th-5th centuries BC from Tyras, Olbia, Chersonesos and Bosporus

The set of plants represented on pieces of art from Greek slates of the northern Black Sea region does not exceed some twenty species, but these include all the major types characteristic of the art of the Classical period. Some of them are fairly widespread and are represented, as a rule, quite realistically (vine, ivy, laurel, olive, acanthus, aracea. celery, or wheat ears) Others, equally important, acquired stylized outlines (flowers and buds of lotus, rosettes, round fruit). Plants of a third type are easily recognized although they were represented rarely (poppy, oak, myrtle, palm tree). And finally, there are a few single representations (melon, almond, conifer cones).

This modest assemblage yields us important information about Greek culture, although it does not reflect the genuine ideas of the Hellenes on the flora of the Black Sea and Mediterranean regions. The pieces of fine arts studied demonstrate a significant part of wreaths of leaves and flowers in the life of Greeks and in their funerary rites Archaeological evidence attests also the symbolical significance of a number of plants as attributes of certain denies or symbols of a stale. Like in Hellas, on the northern coasts of Pontus, a fairly scanty circle of plants and flowers held an important place in decoration of architectural sites, jewellery, painted vases, textiles etc. Moreover, the choice, of these plants had been changing little lor many centuries Ivy and vine always had been the favorite plants of the ancient Greek artists. Lotus vanished from pottery decorations in the 5th century but had been remaining on jewellery and textiles until the end of the period under consideration Mowers of araceae and leaves of acanthus came to be constantly used in decoration of various objects during the Hellenistic period. Any distinctions between the compositions of plant species from different cities in the northern Black Sea area arc absent, the difference having been noted only in their numbers. The material examined shows that the role of flora was similar in the culture of all Greek cities on the northern littoral of the Black Sea This role suited entirely the common Greek tradition, reflecting all its major tendencies and changes in time. Representations of laurel, olive, acanthus, palm and some other southern piants enabled the local inhabitants, who had no possibility to leave the limits of their native polis, to make an idea on the flora of Hellas.

1) - южная часть Керченского полуострова (рис. 2 а, б, 3);

2) -средняя часть полуострова у пролива (рис. 4, 5);

T. N. Smekalova, S. L. Smekalov. Systems of Roads and Land-Plots of the European Bosporus Cities on the Evidence of Aerial Photos, Mapping and Land Surveys

During the peak of the international grain trade in the 4th century BC, almost the entire territory of the Bosporus state was evidently under tillage. Although we have at our disposal very scanty data of the written tradition on the land-division in the European Bosporus, fortunately certain physical traces of that division are still preserved.

The technique of revealing orthogonal systems of land division is based on the supposition that agrarian traits of various patterns of land use must have been reflected more or less distinctly in the now existing realities: on aerial photographs, in the grid of ancient and modern roads, fields, forest belts and boundaries recorded on maps and space photographs of different years. The territory of the Kerch Peninsula as a whole and some its areas in particular, from the Greek and Roman times still retain or retained yet recently information about the ancient land-division. This information may be revealed with the use of a complex of special techniques. On the basis of our recent studies we venture upon the statement that within the European Bosporus, only from a considerable height and under certain natural conditions is it possible to observe immediate indications of the ancient land-division.

Accordingly, the land-plots located by means of air photography are the starting point for the entire logical chain of reconstruction or the key for all subsequent studies. After determination of the immediate signs of land-plot systems on aerial photographs and maps (both old and new large-scale ones), as well as space photographs of high resolution, we selected linear elements, the directions of which corresponded to those of the axes of land-division. The intervals between these lineaments were equal to or divisible by the size of one land-plot (approximately 350 × 385 sq. m). All of the elements found were recorded against a single computer topographic base. The composite map resulting served us as the basis for reconstruction of the system of kleroi (land-plots) of a polis under studies. At the next stage, the data obtained by the remote methods were supplemented by the archaeological evidence available and checked by surveying afoot on the surface. The precise geographical coordinates of distinctly detectable demarcation banks and walls, roads, buildings etc. were determined by means of GPS-receivers and drawn on the composite map of the investigated area. In some cases, magnetometer surveys were employed for revealing anomalies caused by silted-up demarcation ditches or remains of rural houses.

The technique described above has enabled us to reveal three areas of continuous orthogonal land-division on the territory of the European Bosporus (fig. 1):

1) the south-western part of the Kerch Peninsula (fig. 2 а, б, 3);

2) the middle part of the peninsula near the Strait of Kerch (figs. 4, 5);

3) the region on the north-east of the city of Kerch extended towards the Temir-Gora Mountain (fig. 6 а, б, 7).

Essentially new information has been recovered on the distribution of kurgans in the Kerch Peninsula. This was produced by examination of several detailed maps: the so-called ‘verstovka’ or one-verst map based on surveys of 1896 and maps at a scale of 1:25,000 (surveys of 1955-65). All of the barrows marked on these maps have been located and recorded on the composite digitalized scheme (see fig. 8). The number of kurgans thus revealed is over 3,000. They are distributed rather monotonously throughout the western steppe zone of the Crimea adjoining Sivash Sound. However, this monotonousness is completely disturbed as soon as we enter the limits of the Kerch Peninsula. That difference is the first that arrests our attention during examination of the composite map. The most remarkable on the latter is a lengthy chain of kurgans or some local elevations following closely each other. This chain extends from the north-eastern outskirts of the town of Stary Krym along the Churuk-Su River, then it turns abruptly to the east near v. Novopokrovka and runs along the Parpach Ridge up to the Uzunlar Wall. Here the chain splits, one branch of it running to Nymphaion, the other to Cape Ak-Burun. In the western section, the chain of kurgans extends via the eastern bank of the Churuk-Su River complying almost exactly in its southern half with the “bank made by Scythian slaves” on K. Hablitz’s map of 1803 (fig. 9). On aerial photographs of 1972 and the 1:25,000 map, the crest of the Parpach Ridge is clearly discernible in the north-eastern area and south-west of the ridge there is a straight narrow elevation (bank?) with a series of mounds covering it. The number of the mounds amounts to at least 11 throughout a section of about 2-2.5 km (figs. 10, 11).

The most distinct is the kurgan chain extended towards Cape Ak-Burun. Probably it is here that the most active crossing of the strait was functioning. The range of kurgans continues also on the Asiatic coast opposite Ak-Burun. In the sailing directions composed by E. Manganari in 1836 it is seen very distinctly that the shortest way crossing the deeper parts of the strait between its shallower areas is that from Cape Ak-Burun to the Southern Spit (or what is now the Tuzla Spit) (fig. 12).

We have grounds to suppose that the revealed kleroi of Panticapaeum, Nymphaeum and Theodosia belong to the period of the flowering of the Bosporan Kingdom i.e. the 4th century BC. The land division was probably carried out by Leukon I relatively synchronously throughout all the three territories specified above, as well as in some other parts of the Bosporus. Along with the lands which belonged to the cities, there was yet a chora of the Bosporan state in general, the owners of which were Bosporan kings. That ‘Royal Domain’ probably included a considerable area adjoining the coasts of the Azov Sea from v. Zolotoye up to Cape Tarkhan. Here, no land-plots are found but there are traces of the so-called ‘long’ arable fields instead.

Schaub I. Yu. The Chersonesean Maiden, Artemis and the Hind

The present paper is an attempt to answer why the people of Chersonesus chose for their iconography Artemis as the supreme goddess, particularly her depictions with a hind. The author has compared the features of the image and cult of Artemis which had affinity with those of the Taurian goddess Maiden (the epiklesis, blood-thirstiness, human sacrifices, ere). Also the evidence on the worship of hind by the local Crimea population (ritual burials of deer in the Maryino and Salgir kurgans of the 2nd millennium BC, as well as the legend stadially precedent to the myth about lo and telling about a hind crossing the future Bosporus) is here considered against a broad background of parallels from prehistoric Europe, ancient Greece and Siberia. The conclusion is that the iconography of Artemis together with her attribute – a hind – was chosen by the Chersonesites for their goddess Maiden not because they identified the latter as Artemis. That choice was due to the similarity of Artemis and the Great Goddess of the Taurians who, as it seems, was in some way linked with hind but had had as yet no figurative tradition of her own.

Shablavina E. A. Production of Bosporan Craftsmen in the Early Medieval Period (Eagle-Headed Buckles)

The so-called eagle-headed buckles are among the most reliable chronological indicators of the early medieval Crimea. They have been discovered both in burials of the Bosporan necropolis in Kerch and al burial-grounds situated in the southern CHAM, Some of these objects are housed now in the State Hermitage Museum (St. -Petersburg). the State Historical Museum (Moscow), in a number of European museums and in America. Some of the items were lost during the World War II and their pretest whereabouts are unknown. On the surface of the available examples, various traces of tools, working operations and repairs are discernible. By tracewear studies of the techniques of manufacture of the buckles, two centres of jewellery-making in the regions under consideration have been distinguished.

Technical features enable us to segregate among the Bosporan buckles several scries, produced by different craftsmen, i. e.: 1. Original production of buckles: 2 Making of copies from those originals.

Original manufacture of buckles: On the basis of structural features and individual styles expressed in a common scheme of decoration, four series of buckles produced by one and the same artisan have been distinguished. These buckles consist of a rectangular plate with a side projection in the form of the head of a predacious bird and cast loops on which an oval frame with a movable tongue was suspended All the constructional parts of the buckles (plates, frames and tongues) were uniformly cast and finished: the cast surface was smoothed off by grinding, the design finished with a burin, the article was hot-gilded. and stone inserts fixed in cast and then bored-out lockets. The pans were cast in two-piece clay moulds. Both pieces of the mould were imprinted from a single metallic stamp or an exemplary buckle so that the two sides of the cast item were identical (ef. the first series of two buckles, in v. nos. 1820/382 and 1820/301 from the State Hermitage; Fig. I).

The mould for the metallic stamp was undoubtedly modelled by imprinting a wooden model covered with wax. The design on such a mode) could be easily corrected or even completely altered before its use. In that way different scries of buckles were manufactured. After each reshaping of the wood-and-wax model, the front piece of the mould was made in which then a wax model for the rear side was cast by splashing By means of the latter the second piece of the mould was modelled. After the mould was completed, a metallic prototype of the buckles was cast which together with the wood-and-wax model was kept by the artisan for replication of the series. When the metallic model was lost, manufacture of the corresponding series ceased altogether; when the wood-and-wax model was lost it became impossible to modify the original example. Thus e. g. the buckles of the second and third scries were manufactured differing in their designs but with plates of the same dimensions.

'1 "he second scries of Bosporan buckles is represented by two items from the Hermitage collection (inv. no. 1820/ M and no. 1101/2; Fig. 2) and another one found in Gurzuf and now housed in Berlin (Fig. 3: 1). All of the three examples arc identical. Their plates are decorated on the periphery by S-shaped volutes. In (he centre they have a rectangular field decorated by a design of four volutes encircling a cast socket with a stone insert. The pattern on the plates resembles that of the first series of silver buckles although it is not identical to (lie latter. The composition of the design is schematically the same in the two scries differing in the second one only by a slightly smaller size of the plates, different dimensions of the decorated fields and their design which however is compositionally similar to the first group, Furthemore. the loops on the example* of the second series are located on (he spot of (he eagle-headed side projection of the first group.

In A. A. Bobrinsky's collection of the Hermitage there is a silver gilded buckle which represents a third series (inv. no. 1101/3; Fig. 3: 2). In the centre of its plate there is a rectangular field decorated with S-shaped volutes and a herringbone pattern, encircled by a border of S-shaped volutes. Although its design differs from that of the second group of buckles, this is a copy from the same counterpart It has the plate of the same dimensions with the same position of the cast loops. Undoubtedly, the mould for thebuckle under consideration was modelled by means of the same wood-and-wax model although with a slightly differing design on its wax layer. The technique of its manufacture is also the same. Thus we have grounds to suppose that this object was manufactured by the same artisan who made buckles of the first and second groups. From publications we know yet about three other buckles from Chufut-Kale (catacomb grave 21), Suuk-Su (tomb 169), Skalistoye (tomb 683) (Fig. 4) which belong to the third series.

The fourth series is small and consists of four silver eagle-headed buckles with a rectangular field on their plate. Although identical on the front side, these buckles differ in the technique of their manufacture. Two of them (inv. nos. 1820/145 and 1820/875 from the Hermitage collection; Fig. 5) have cast plates with a rectangular perforation in the middle covered from the underside by a soldered thin bronze plate with a socket. The from and back sides of the buckles arc identical.

Another buckle (no. 1821/19; Fig. 6) of this series might at fust appear to be identical to the first two in its dimensions, design and construction (Fig. 6: 1), However, in this case the plate with a decorated field and a socket was cast as a single piece. On the front side the buckle shows in addition certain differences of design ax compared with the former examples. In the upper left corner of the plate the two S-shaped volutes are arranged differently, although generally the pattern is similar. Furthermore, the corners of the central rectangular perforation on the plate have another form, as well as the outlines of the frame around the eye of the bird on the side projection, while the two small strips on the bird's neck' are lacking. These facts indicate that the initial wood-and-wax model from which the intermediate metal example was made had been altered in the mentioned parts. Afterwards, another, slightly modified metallic model was cast with a rectangular opening in the centre. After that latter model, the third object of the group under consideration was manufactured in the same technique as the two former buckles. It thus seems that the third item was copied from a completed example and therefore it must have had an imprint from the abovementioned soldered plate patching the central perforation. However such an imprint is lacking because exactly this spot was ground off although the surface around it has been left untouched. We have thus grounds to conclude that the item under consideration was manufactured by another artisan since it was copied from a completed example and the casting has been finished in another technique.

The fourth series includes yet another buckle (inv. no. 1823/30; Fig. 6: 2). which is slightly different from the three described above This also was cast as one piece. Its appearance has much in common with the first two silver items of the series. However the fourth buckle has a different shape of the bird-headed side projection. This article evidently was also copied from a completed example since it has a rectangular imprint on the back side which resembles the soldered bronze patch on the two first buckles. Moreover, the central rectangular field on the front side is convex. Evidently the maker had at his disposal a completed example but the soldered platelet with a socket had been broken off. He possibly replaced in with a patch made of wax instead of bronze having pressed the wax through the rectangular hole from the underside of the article. The wax formed a bulging surface on the front side. On that surface, the outlines of the frame with a socket were roughly modelled. As to the shape of the bird's head which differs from those on the first two buckles, here the alterations had taken place earlier, viz. during the manufacture of the intermediate model with a rectangular opening in the centre. The maker modified the model either having attached a new smaller head to it or diminished the previous one.

In the group of the four buckles described above, the two first items with soldered platelets are the original ones whereas the other two are imprints (evidently made by some other craftsmen) from these originals. The prototypes of all these replicas must nave been created by the maker of the first two buckles since the alterations they show could have been produced only on the basic wood-and-wax model. Hence the appearance of the prototypes, as well as the technique of their manufacture, were evidently identical with the two items with soldered plates. The maker of the latter, judging by the common style of the rectangular plates, the similar technique of finishing of the articles and the use of two types of frames in the buckles, was the saint' artisan who made all the three series described above. Only that artisan had at his disposal the wood-and-wax model and after its modification he cast the metal counterparts for each new series.

Repairs of silver buckles The buckles of the four series described above, particularly the gilding and silver on the protruding parts of the relief, are worn out. In addition, the loops on the plates and crossbars of the frames were ground oft. broken and then repaired. In some cases, the loops cast as one piece with the plates were also broken. Their remains were either filed out or new loops cut from a brass plate were riveted to the plate below them. Where the crossbar of the frame was badly ground that, it was fixed on the plate by means of two forged brass platelets (Fig. 1: I).

All of the repairs were accomplished by a single person and evidently the same who manufactured the brass replicas from silver buckles. This is suggested by the same technique of making the loops and their fixation, as well as the identical material - brass used for the restoration.

Replication of the originals. Among the Bosporan collection there are still other seven belt buckles which were cast from brass (not from bronze as supposed before) by some later artisan. Among these, we may select two (inv. nos. 1820/300 and 1101/5 from the State Hermitage; Fig. 7) which are identical to the silver buckle no. 1820/ 301 (Fig. 1: 2) on their front and back side. These show the same features of the bowl-shaped back side, the same arrangement of the holes with pins (fixation on the belt), as well as all the traces of repair and defects, which are found on the silver prototype. The cast pans of the brass buckles were joint together in the same way as in the process of repairing the silver ones although the mechanical finishing was different. The tracewear analysis has shown that brass eagle-headed buckles of the group

under consideration were cast in two-piece clay moulds which had been modelled by means of a completed and repaired example. Despite the similarity between the silver and brass buckles as mentioned above, it is evident that they have been made by different artisans since the technique of their execution differs. Moreover, the second artisan had not at his disposal the metallic model after which the silver buckles had been cast.

The remaining brass buckles of the series show a similar technique of manufacture (Fig, 8-11},

The other brass and silver buckles known from publications undoubtedly belong to the series considered above. The three silver examples include one from Eski-Kermen and two from Kerch. These items had probably served as the originals for making the brass buckles: two from Gurzuf and two from Kerch which are now in New-York, Berlin and Simferopol (Fig. 15, 16).

Thus all brass buckles were cast in two-piece clay moulds. These moulds were modelled by means of silver examples manufactured some time before and repaired in the course of their use.

The facts described above allow us to reconstruct the production of several consignments of Bosporan buckles.

There were two periods of their manufacture: 1) the original production, and 2) making copies from the originals. The entire group of silver buckles described above was made by one and the same craftsman. He designed templates for these articles, modified them and cast hard metal examples with their use. After those examples, consignments of similar buckles were manufactured over a fairly short periods of time. The objects thus manufactured were rather quickly worn out during their use so that they were repaired possibly by the same artisan who had made them. These buckles undoubtedly were in use concurrently and were damaged in a similar way. It was probably another craftsman who afterwards was occupied with repairing the silver buckles which still remained in use and who made a new series of brass buckles copying them from the already existing objects. It is difficult to say who was the first artisan, why he had been working only over a short period of time and what was his fate. Undoubted is only that he lived in Bosporus because all his products arc concentrated within the territory of the Crimea (Gurzuf, Suuk-Su, Eski-Kermen, Chufut-Kale, Skalistoye) and have not been reported from elsewhere.

M. V. Sharygina. The Origins of Zoomorphic Combs of the Great Migration Period in Europe

This paper deals with the problem of the origins of combs decorated with zoomorphic motifs from Western and Central Europe of the Great Migration period. Preliminary, all these combs have been divided into two groups (fig. 1): types A and B. 1) Type A is composed of combs with triangular backs and paired horse heads turned to opposite directions. These combs are dated by the horizon of Untersiebenbrunn (fig. 2), while the earlier triangular combs of the late Roman period (without zoomorphic decorations) were distributed in the Weser-Elba region. 2) Combs of type B are decorated with highly stylized heads of different animals “facing” one another. These are concentrated in Frisia, where the centre of their manufacture was located and from where they may have come to England. The shape of type B combs also goes back to prototypes of the late Roman period but from the area of the Chernyakhov culture. Along with the combs, also belt mounts were decorated with paired horse heads (fig. 3. 3, 4).

Combs with bone mounts similarly decorated were used by the Sarmatians on the Lower Volga River (fig. 6, 7); moreover, they demonstrate the same motifs either of two horse heads turned to opposite directions or heads of some other creatures (mostly birds) “facing” one another. Furthermore, paired animal heads are known on sewn-on plates (amulets) of the Tashtyk culture in southern Siberia of the 3rd-5th centuries AD (fig. 8). This fact suggests either some common origin or, perhaps, that the motif was borrowed by the Tashtyk population from the Sarmatians.  In the 3rd-5th centuries, representations of horse are found in the form of pendants of the Kama animal style. In this form, although already as rattling pendants, they survived until the late 10th century. In the 9th century, bone plates with representations of horse heads appear in Norway; at the same time, combs decorated with horse heads are introduced in the territory of Ancient Rus and found among Finno-Ugrian antiquities from Eastern Europe (fig. 8). The motif itself of paired horse heads suggests certain migration processes or contacts of West and East Europe with the Sarmatians and with the Kama region and southern Siberia during the Great Migrations.

A. V. Kurbatov. Regional Traits in Material Culture of Everyday Life (Leather Finds from the Excavation in Roosikrantsi Street 9/11 in Tallinn)

The collection of leather goods from the excavation in Roosenkrantsi Str. 9/11, although not very numerous, may serve as an excellent ‘illustration’ for peculiarities of the cultural and historical development of the late-medieval Tallinn. Most of the footwear models are dated probably to the 14th century. Practically each of the objects documents the traditions of the footwear crafts which arose and had been developing throughout the entire Middle Ages in countries of Western and Northern Europe. Objects manufactured by ancient Russian craftsmen are limited to fragmentary porshens (leather sandals). These finds evidently reflect trading contacts of Tallinn with various Russian towns suggesting that merchants from Pskov, Novgorod etc. may have been temporarily living in Tallinn and possibly had their yards there.

In this connection it is appropriate to remember here the formation of trading links between Russian cities and Riga. According to the evidence of the “Chronicles of Livonia” (XIV, 9), the first trade treaty opening for Riga merchants the route to Rus was concluded with Prince of Polotsk in 1210. Perhaps soon afterwards, in the New Town of Riga, a trading yard of Russian merchants was built. However, the first Russian traders in Riga are mentioned in 1209 during a ceremonious action which took place near the Church of St Peter in Riga. In addition to the clergy, noblemen and other Germans, also some Russians and Livs were present at the ceremony (Цауне 1994: 204; Цауне 2004: 347). During excavations in Riga, objects similar to numerous finds from Russian towns are occasionally uncovered. The most remarkable are perhaps embroidered soft shoes. Not only their laying-out but also the variants of embroidering resemble those of the finds from Novgorod, Pskov and Smolensk (Svarane 1986: 102–105). On the other hand, objects of everyday use from Western countries have been found in Novgorod. Some of them may have come here via Riga. Among leather articles, only bags with floral designs are mentioned by E. A. Rybina (Рыбина 1994: 87–89). But we may add to these also three fragments of leather cases for wax-covered wooden tablets for writings found in the layers of 1328–1382. As noted by Rybina, neither the cases themselves nor wooden writing tablets of the same size are characteristic of Rus (Варфоломеева 1995: 195–201). Of western provenance possibly was a series of metal parts of leather soft cases for knives recovered mostly from layers of the 14th century (Варфоломеева 1994: 169, 175) and certain types of the cases themselves (Варфоломеева 1993: 164, 166). In Novgorod, also footwear made in western towns has been occasionally found. The most numerous finds come perhaps from the Gothic Excavation, the materials from which have not been published completely even now. In that area, according to written sources, a Gothic trading yard was once situated. Therefore it was not accidental that exactly at this excavation, numerous objects of Western manufacture, including a leather knife-case, have been uncovered (Рыбина 1978: 211–224, fig. 22: 3). In the Kirovsk Excavation were found parts of low soft footwear with a carved decoration at the toe well known in West-European towns and a purse? with stamped design which included floral motifs (Колчин, Рыбина 1982, fig. 30: 3; fig. 31: 4, 5). Similar footwear is presented in an album dealing with applied arts of ancient Novgorod (Древний Новгород 1985, figs. 292, 293).

Comparison of assemblages of leather objects from Russian and Western cities enables us to discriminate finds of Western provenance among those from the Kremlin of Tver. These objects come from the layers of the 14th and first half of the 15th century (Курбатов 1997: 75 – 78). In Vyborg, on the contrary, most of the leather objects of the 15th–17th centuries were manufactured in Western traditions. Against that background, only a small group of ware from Russian towns is distinguishable (Курбатов 2003: 135). On the basis of all that is discussed above, the finds from Tallinn may be dated fairly precisely and compared with the regional manufacturing traditions.

P. M. Leus. Quotations from Chinese Written Sources on the History of Ancient Türks in Russian Archaeology

Funeral rites of ancient Turks are until now an object of continuous debates. Extremely important written sources with descriptions of funerary rites of Eastern Turks are medieval Chinese dynastic chronicles. The most comprehensive translation of their evidence is presented in the book of the Chinese orientalist Liu Mau-Tsai published in German. This work is widely cited by Russian researchers.

Often descriptions of the funerary ritual are adduced as confirmation that stone stelae-balbals (in some cases fairly numerous) were installed near a grave symbolizing the enemies killed. However, careful examination of the German text shows that in none of the cases the author uses the verb ‘install’ or its sinonyms. On the contrary, such verbs as ‘lay’ or ‘lay down’ are employed suggesting that we are dealing not with installation of some upright stelae but rather with laying some stone embankments. Thus the translations from German adduced by some researchers can in no way serve as corroboration of the fact of installation of stone balbals beside ancient Turkic graves. In situations where some foreign work is cited it would be therefore more correct to present not only the author’s translation of the chosen fragment but also the original text. Moreover, such a practice is not entirely new both in Russian nor West-European scientific tradition.

Smirnov A. M. «Female Deity and Temple» in the Art of Monumental Sculpture and Architecture of Europe in 4th–3rd Millennia BC

One the most noteworthy archaeological phenomenon of the 4th millennium BC is that of megalithism: erection of monumental stone temple and funerary structures, monumental sculpture etc. In the megalithic art of the second half of that period, depictions of female personages or attributes of female sex came to be predominant. Their interpretations either as deities concerned with the world of the dead or some powers of procreation usually are rather poorly grounded. This paper presents an analysis of the figurative context of the images in question in order to obtain reliable information on their purpose. The conclusion is that most consistently the female images of the megalithic arts recur in combination with certain figures referred to as “grilles”. Until recently, the purpose of the latter objects also has been unclear. The key for their interpretation was provided by the fact that these “grills” were found also in some scenes with inclusion of paired animals. Such scenes had close parallels in the art of Mesopotamia of the same period (4th millennium BC). There, these grilles were specific trellised (made of reed) huts/temples of the goddess Nintur – the deity of procreation. Thus the combined representations of female figures and the “grilles” possibly bore the same implication.

Discussed in the Appendix are some subjects  from Christian scriptures closely related to the main idea of this paper dealing with the childbirth that took place in an animal byre. Such an unusual situation, in the author’s concept, derives from a deeply ancient mythologeme preserved in the historical memory.

Gavritoukhine I. O., M. M. Kazanski.
